does any one think like myself that this is been struck onto the copper coating as were the coating is missing the strike is not as sharp and it looks like 2 layers of plating so could this of been struck after coating I see were there is silver that the strike is weaker could this mean that this is struck over and does the date look like the 1952 renniks B62 variety

Well, let's see things in a different way. Back in the 50s, were steel planchets readily available? I am not certain but I would highly doubt that copper plated steel planchets were even made back then. Copper was cheap and abundant and to me, this doesn't make much sense at all if it was struck in that era.

Don't get me wrong - it can be a possible pattern / trial but I honestly think chances of that are rather low.

thank gx the picture in the post 9.23am shows a small piece of the coating it is what is magnetic in that first picture it is stuck to the manet in the photo not what is under the coating I still have no idea but I don't think I should chuck it in the bin just yet as I cant find any kind of magnetic penny took it to a local block at thulimba who has sold coins for 40years and didn't tell him it was magnetic he said it looked genuine to him then I took out my magnet and he now has no idea who could you send this to to get them to have a look who studies varieties

then the weight would be out and it would not be silver under the plating

there is a reason it was made now I just have to work it out need a expert to say it was a die first who would that be any idea ? then get the medal tested to see what its made of then chuck it in the bin as it to hard

shainw it depends on were you live to have it looked at by professional dealer. there is a diagnostic pathology lab in Wagga that test metal aswell as other stuff all you do is feel out a submission form and take it in.

I was told the other day by a old fella who was a guard at the mint in the 60s that he heard of plated coins as a way of steeling silver and gold from the mint they would plate them and re melt them when the got them out was there a plating plant at the mint by any chance its of to the XRF machine Thursday at lunchtime any thought on whats under the coating I say silver if it silver is there any other silver pennys or has anyone ever heard of one and if it is what would it be worth any takers
