From when I was still a noob at photographing coins. The reverse except on the high points is mostly silvered.

Full flan and legends, some silvering remains. Good EF.

Do the two scratches on the reverse stop this from being EF?

Even with the scratches I would grade it at AU. Beautiful coin, congrats.

In general 'about uncirculated', matching the 'nearly as struck' which is more commonly used for ancients.
It's similar to me using 'verdigris' when most ancient collectors here use 'bronze disease'.

As per grading, definitely EF (or XF if you prefer) or better.

Thanks, just found it, I had to look at several sites, they don't all use AU. I was just curious about this coin, normally I don't really care for grading, it is too subjective.

Here is one of my favorite roman coins.
Struck to commemorate the recovery of 2 of 3 legionary eagles lost by Varus in the battle of the Teutoburger Forest.

It has a nice enough obverse, but a rather weak and worn reverse.
How would one grade this coin?

I would say Vfine, though it's difficult to grade this type.
