Hello. What do you think about this Large Cent from 1798? In my opinion coin was cleaned and color is unnatural. But still coin has nice details (G04?). Can you tell me which variety it is? I can buy this LC for 80$. It is good price in your opinion? Thank you for answers. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

1. Why was this moved to the error section? 2. What make you think this coin is anything but genuine?
IMO, the surfaces are not original as it has been either dipped and/or cleaned harshly to remove corrosion. You can still see trace amounts of it. Although $80 is not a bad price, I wouldnt necessarily want to spend close to $100 on any coin that has very little "wow factor" other than the date alone.

VG8 Details. Not sure of variety. If a common one the price is about full retail. If a rarer variety it is a good price. I have to disagree with ben though.. Personally I think this one has rather nice eye appeal.

Unfortunately, I think it is very common S-187 variety. Look at the highest berry at left side of reverse.

Definitely S-187 one of the most common varieties of the year. Looks lightly cleaned. Seems like a nice price to me.

Do buy it at that price, despite the cleaning. There's pleasingly even wear on this early copper! That's a big plus, IMHO.

Very pleasant details remain and no corrosion issues. While I personally would not put that one in my set because of the cleaning and resulting color (it would simply stick out like a soar thumb in my album), the price is great. I wish my draped busts all had that level of detail!

Does anyone else see the porosity?

Quote: Does anyone else see the porosity? A bit on the obverse I'd say, but the details of the design are quite nice in this price range. As a new collector to EAC stuff, I'm pretty floored by pricing on more common coins in horrid condition, I understand rarity scales but I see AG/detail "scudzy" draped bust Half Cents and large cents going for way more than they should IMO on ebay all the time. A few I've bid what I think is a very fair price only to get outbid by double or triple my top price I'm willing to spend - on common stuff too. So this coin at $80.00 even being a common Sheldon is not too bad.

VG-8 details, and appears to be genuine.

This piece looks genuine to me.
A little porosity like it has is not a problem vis-a-vis authenticity for a coin this old, man-handled, and harshly cleaned.

* I moved this to the US Classic Variety section since you asked "Can you tell me which variety it is?"
