Hello, Just wondering if anyone can tell me if this 1836 Half Dime is the Large 5 or Small 5 variety on the reverse.

I can't seem to find a good web site that shows a good comparison between the two types. Does anyone have any good links to sited or books that aren't too costly that cover the Capped Bust and Seated half dimes and possibly one for Seated dimes as well. I'm working on the Dansco albums for both sets and could use some good reference material for them. I was bidding on a couple books on ebay but didn't win and I don't want to use the buy it now feature and spend over $100 for each book.

Here's a couple pics so you can help me figure out which one it is:

Compared to this Small 5 listed on ebay: 321272435191

I see a Large 5 for your Half Dime.

Is it just the top bar of the 5 that determines if it's a large or small 5 or are there other things that help make a positive ID ? Anyone have any links that will help me out on all the other Large Date, Small Date, Large 5c and Small 5c varieties that I'll need for my Dansco album ? My RedBook gives a good example of the Drapery vs No Drapery but that's about all it shows. Any info or links would be a great help. I've done a little searching but haven't found a site that covers it all and has good pics for comparison.

The best book on the capped bust Half Dimes is Federal Half Dimes 1794 - 1837 but it is long out of print and not cheap if you can find one. ($125 if you are lucky.) The best book on the Seated half dimes is Al Blythe's Complete guide to Seated half dimes. Not the best book and not complete but better than the Valentine book on Half Dimes because the images are larger. (What good is a variety book on Half Dimes with the plates the actual size of the coin?) The best reference on the Seated dimes is a website by Gerry Fortin that covers all the known varieties.

A word about Gerry Fortin:

I have had the opportunity to chat with him twice at the Manchester NH Coin Expo.
I have seen his dimes.
His condition rarity collection is at the top of the list of registered sets.
The man knows dimes, and by extension, the other denominations as well.
I recommend his online site as well.

Thanks for this info and links, I really appreciate it!! I'll have to check that web site out better later or over the weekend and search around to see what them books go for. Not being able to find a real good web site and the cost of the books was the problem I ran into when searching. I just need something to help me identify the different varieties so I can be sure I'm buying the ones I need for my Dansco albums. I just don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a couple books. I had hoped that there was a book in PDF format or an ebook of some sort that I could use on my computer that way I could look at the coin on screen with my digital microscope and then compare it to a PDF or ebook but right now I'll take whatever info and links I can get.

Thanks Again !!

Thank you BH1964, that's the comparison I've been looking for. Is there a book or web site you know of that has a side by side comparison for the different varieties? That photo you posted makes it so much easier to see the difference between the two coins. Thanks again !!
