Today I went through part of my new Mercury dime stash that arrived Friday, nothing seem to be refreshing until this came along. I visited the VarietyVista site to check if its a existing DDO variety, and DDO-003 maybe as close as it gets... The motto on my coin has a larger spread than one pictured in VarietyVista, perhaps a earlier die stage.

I corresponded with Joe Miller that discovered this variety, and he thinks it maybe an earlier die state. Joe suggested that I will need to confirm it with Dr. Wiles. Here's a link with images. http://varietyvista.com/1945PDDO003%20dime.htm

Quote: I don't see anything
This one doesn't manifest so much in "clear doubling" as it does in the extra thickness of the lettering. You can see it most clearly here in Mac's detail image of IN GOD WE TRUST. Here's an example of a non-doubled 1945 for comparison (an appropriate example because macmercury now owns this coin ): Y'know, now that I look at this coin again, Mac, do you see doubling in the date?

The strike on the date looks thick only to me under the loupe, but it has all the characteristic sign that Joe Miller mentioned from his email. Quote: Your coin looks like it could be an earlier die-state, but James Wiles would have to verify it. The dot between IN and GOD is weak and the die gouge above the 19 also shows on my example. On my example, there is a thin vertical die gouge between the base of the letters E & T of "We Trust", but I don't see it in your pics(could be due to light angle). If yours has the vertical die gouge too, then I suspect it is the same die. If it doesn't, then it is probably an earlier die-state. P.S. I think an early die state might prove this to be a Class II+VI...but I could be wrong ;-) Joe Miller Hope Joe don't mind me posting his responds, also my camera skill isn't as good as the pro's here, so hopefully I once I send it to Dr Wiles, he can confirm it.

I do think this would be a good candidate for die #3. It definitely looks like a class 6 doubled die which die #3 is listed as. I can check my Mercury dime variety reference book to see if they list any die markers. Just Give me till Monday.

My book only goes up to DDO 2. After looking over your coin and the pictures on variety vista I do think yours is die #3. I is definitely a class 6. You can tell by the thickness on the right side of the artist's initials and also the thickness on the left side of the motto.

It is definitely a DDO. I'm thinking it could be a later die state of one of the DDOs (or possibly a discovery) I do think it looks like a type VI distended die doubling.

Thanks Tony,
I was going to see if I could go to the FUN show and bring this along to get it verify, if time allowed. Otherwise; I will send it to Dr. Wiles after the show. Good to see you check in.
