Just be smart- People can be a lot more clever than you would think- And again, if doing a cash transaction of this sum, I would sure try to make sure that money was on me for the shortest amount of time possible

Quote: So, even meeting at a police station, and going to a coin store, you think there's still a good possibility something would go wrong? People were getting robbed and killed for a 500 dollar iphone on craigslist a while back. Then there was the scam of people selling cars and when the person showed up they robbed them at gun point. For 12k yea theres enough of a chance that thats what this is that you should be very weary. Like mentioned someone else could be following you home to come back later ect. Leaving the police station with them would be a bad idea as well. The whole point is that you want other people with guns there on the chance they want to rob you, leaving to go to a coin store makes going to the station at all pointless as they would have ample opportunity to rob you after meeting there.

I would simply not bother to turn up at the meeting. I tend to value my physical safety rather highly.
Go to a specialist bullion dealer instead, if you REALLY want them.

Well, I think just meeting at a police station and cutting out the coin store would be good. Like I said, the guy had absolutely no resistance to doing the entire deal in the police station for both of our safeties.

It is all about risk/reward. At BEST you are saving $3,000 vs. ordering from APMEX and having complete anonymity and protection. As previously mentioned, if my intentions were less than pure there are a thousand ways I could agree to meet you at the police station and still cause you all kinds of grief with very little risk to myself. Personally, not even close to worth it for me but you seem to have your mind made up so I wish you the best of luck.

I would avoid this too. All it takes is someone to follow you home, or even run up on your car at a traffic light on the way home. Besides, why isn't the guy taking them to a LCS where he is going to get melt for them? Sounds fishy to me. There has to be plenty of coin shops he could sell them to in the NJ/NY area.

well at this point he probably has your name and phone number, so finding out where you live is a no brainer. Have fun in Cortlandt Manor, New York located in the Town of Cortlandt in Northern Westchester County, New York.

So, how would I go about asking the police for protection? Do I call them in advance and say the situation? The person who will be going with me (for my protection) is wondering.

What do you expect the police to do? Escort you home and watch your house?

They won't agree to "protect you" the whole point is a deterrent to prevent theft.
Just like they wouldn't agree to oversea my sale, though the Sargent did ask me if I wanted him to watch the sale. I said no, because I felt the buyer wouldn't try to rip me off for a old shotgun, and if he was a felon( which was my main concern), he wouldn't show up in a parking lot at the police station.
In your situation, I can't imagine any way I would feel comfortable doing this deal with a stranger, outside of a coin store.

If you are going through with this (and again, I already made my opinion clear), call up the police station and just tell them what's going on, and see how they react. If you're meeting at a suburban police station, I think they will be helpful, if not a bit inquisitive/concerned... If you are trying to set this up at a busy urban police station, I suspect they may not be helpful or understanding of this as you might think

I'm really not too worried about him knowing which county I live in. He doesn't have my last name, and my phone is actually listed in White Plains, New York (which is not where I live). And I don't want protection by police (following me home or anything else suggested), I just want to make sure that this craigslist no one will not pull out a gun on me. And I think he is uneducated in taking it to a Local Coin Store because he found it in a storage locker. It is safe to say that he isn't an expert on coins. He tries to take it to a pawn shop, the most liquid of places, and is offered something unreasonable. So, he puts an advertisement on craigslist, and I, being the coin shark I am on craigslist, swoop it up within the hour it is posted.
