So I literally stumbled across this "Gem BU 1928 Lincoln Cent" on ebay. Since I'm nothing of an LWC expert--perhaps someone can better articulate what's wrong about this coin--compared below to a certified example?

Looks like a "Huckster."

Ouch! Thats fake for sure. And a poor one at that. The lettering and the date are quite thick, and Lincoln has almost no detail. I notice a lot of the chinese fakes are missing the jacket line closest to the date as well. Indeed

That's what I picked up too--overly bold legends and a weak portrait of Lincoln.

I just compared his 1891 Seated dime listing to a genuine 1891....what a difference. especially on the obverse legend "UNITED STATES", look how close the D of united is to the S of states. date off also. Interesting...

We might as well keep the "what's wrong with this coin" game going? I don't know this coin series well, but I do see what you're saying--it's obvious. It looks like the legends are the wrong size--creating all these spacing problems?

That dime caught my eye as well, along with the 1906 IHC, 1887-s Seated dime, and 1851 large cent. The more I look the more I find....

The dime I get. But why would anyone fake the penny. A 28S I can see. That one? Nope.

I'm not sure I see the value in faking these coins but the legends could appear to be so sloppy because of an old whizzing. But I'd be anxious to see what someone much more in the know thinks.

Quote: But why would anyone fake the penny Because they can. They have fakes for every year. They use the same "die" for most of them and just swap dates. Back when alibaba allowed them there were even fakes of the 50's lincolns.

even if someone offered them $20 for that, they're probably making a good profit.

When I look at the 1891 dime, my eye is drawn to the rock Liberty is sitting on. To the left of the shield, the rock looks very different on the examples DVCollector posted.

All the coins listed as suspected counterfeits are mine. I'm the same seller who was offering the 1901 Indian Head cent that was in question yesterday. I hope list members looked at the photos I posted that I believe don't show any metal above the second T in STATES. As I said yesterday, I am going to show that coin to my local dealer and will submit if for certification. I'm a collector of 40 years who buys coins on ebay to resell to pay for my hobby. All the coins that list members are questioning are individual purchases from other ebay sellers in the last month or so. I am certainly no "huckster" as one list member suggested (I'm a Lutheran minister who takes my good name, and ebay feedback very seriously). I am a bit incredulous to think that almost every coin I have purchased in the past month is a counterfeit. Out of respect for the group I will remove the coins in question from ebay and show them, as well, to my local dealer.

Feel free to check my ebay feedback left for the sellers of these coins so you know that they are all purchases I have recently made - samhan_53024 is my ebay ID.

Hello Paul Bulgerin, Just wanted to say the members on this site ( CCF) are very knowledgeable, we take our hobby very serios, I don't think any member is trying to say you are selling counterfeit coins but, looking at the photos we have put up, they become very suspious. Yes, please take your coin back to your dealer or submit to a TPG for a true grade.

If you notice in my OP at the top--my discussion focused on the merits of the coin--I did not speculate at all about the seller or their intentions.
