Wow ... I am seriously concerned that one of our newer members is in for a serious bad time ... that is you coinkid. Everything about this 'deal' suggests that the seller is looking for a rip-off patron. I personally would not execute such a meet in any public place ... even if it were the Police Dept lobby. Truly ... why would anyone sell authentic gold ASE below melt? Too good to be true ... then it is. Forget the calipers to measure diameter ... better IMHO to forget the idea and hopefully the perp does not have your address where all that cash is stored. Please let us know how this works out for you. Worried for you ... David

There is a reason everyone is telling you this is a bad idea. Because it is one. Stay safe, don't let greed get the better of you.

Okay, I'll be meeting at a precinct tomorrow. I'm really not getting a bad vibe from this, as deals like this DO exist. (there have been a number of craigslist deals with less money where it has been equally as shady but have worked out well) I'll be with my father, who handles large sums of cash like this regularly. We will have an officer to protect us, and as a precaution, I will take note of all license plates in the parking lot. I will let you all know how this goes. I very much appreciate your concerns.

I'm sure somebody must have mentioned it but don't let the seller know your home address. You will need their contact information of course.
Why anyone would sell AGE below melt is a mystery when a "We buy gold" place would pay melt value and many online buyers pay over melt.
And yes, aside from common sense (i.e. no damaged coins) if you verify the weight, diameter, and thickness of each piece they're good. They are 22k and weight "over" you know. :)

Yep, I'm even thinking of having a third person come with us, show up a few minutes early to the deal and pose as a stranger, and then handing the coins off to this individual to throw off any potential followers.

Being a former owner of a shop that bought/sold second hand property...I am surprised no one mentioned this....
Why would anyone abandon $13,000 worth of gold in a storage unit? Even if you were behind ten years you would still have more value in the contents than what you owed for the unit rent. If his story is a lie (which I highly suspect it is) then where does the lie end? My guess...they are stolen.

This thread gives me a relevant opportunity to bestow some of my career expertise to forum members... When buying something from someone you don't know well... Ask open ended questions about the item(s) i.e. ask questions that need a story to answer, not just yes or no. Make the person selling talk as much as possible and listen to them. The more they talk the more likely you will be able to feel out the legitimacy of their story. Ask them question that pertain to their knowledge of the item. If the bought it, they will know about it. If they inherited it, they will have stories to tell about it...if they stole it they won't have anything to say much beyond price. And in this specific case...ask about the storage unit auction..ask where the unit was, when the auction was, and call the establishment to confirm they even sold off some units contents. When it comes to $13,000 no one should begrudge you doing your diligence and checking things out! Ask them why they need to sell it If after all these questions are answered you still feel comfortable with the sale...it is probably an OK deal....but NEVER EVER let price over ride your instincts. As soon as you let greed be your decision maker is when you get burned.

What I don't understand is why the guy doesn't sell these gold coins to a coin shop where he could get a lot more money. The Police Station means nothing. The problem is when leaving the Police Station.
Anyway, I wish you good luck !

Well tomorrow we will even ask an officer nicely to escort us to our car. It can't hurt to ask about the coins and feel out whether or not they are stolen. However, if he bought something in a storage locker he might not be the most numismatically savvy of people, and would not know where to take them other than a pawn shop. We all take for granted knowing exactly how to liquidate our purchases to maximize profit.
