Hello. Please help me with grading this Buffalo nickel. I can buy this coin for 100-120$, but I don't know how to grade it. I saw at PCGS site VF35 example with much less details and XF40 was more similar to "my" coin. But when I looked at Buffalo grading guide, I saw VG08-F12 examples with similar details. Why there is so huge difference? Maybe 1914-d had weaker strike? I send you seller pics, they are not too good, but I hope you can help me. Also, coin is little toned, what do you think, it is natural or artifical toning? Thanks!

net grade xf 40 watch the mintmark should not touch the c. could be the picture but if you have in hand start looking at the different positions of mintmark on slabbed 14 d's on ebay.

Thank you for your opinion. I will look closer and inspect the mintmark. So you think it may be XF coin, so 100-120$ will be good price for it?

Vf 20 retail in Coin World is $200.00. There is no way it grades under vf 30. A dear friend passed last week and I just made a deal with his wife to take over 50% of the store. If you walked in to the store with that coin and I liked the d I would pay $100.00 for it $120.00 if I had to

More info go to ebay 1916 d buffalo. Click sold listings and then set grade ms65. You will see a David K Lawrence coin with that same reverse. Not only the position of the d but for ms 65 a weak strike reverse could be that the same die from 1914 was used again in 1916. Great experience for you to learn hoe to research coins. Certainly explains your 1914 strong obverse with weak reverse. When you see the 1916 slabbed ms65 and that reverse you will understand that a strong obverse doesn't mean a strong reverse

EF-40 coin and it appears to have been cleaned, making it a details grade.

Mikey07nj it is very interesting about weakness of reverse. I was worried, that this coin may be cleaned... Reverse color looks nice, but also strange. I hope it is natural toning.
