Thanks for the heads up commems.

I will probably go for the GITD coins for my two kids.

I am excited about the Falcon Bullion release. Are there any press releases on a bullion series yet?

The Snow Owl sounds interesting for the big spenders.

The RCM releasing another WWI commemorative coin in February after just releasing the WWI silver dollar in January makes me wonder how many coins they have planned to mark the WWI and WWII anniversaries.

I might be interested in collecting the series if the issues are limited to two or three per year, but if the RCM is planning a monthly release I will likely be passing on them.

Yeah, what I heard is that they will be releasing every month.

Officially is this: As 2014 marks the centennial of the First World War and the 75th anniversary of the Second World War, the Royal Canadian Mint is developing an all-encompassing coin program to commemorate both historical events. With so many stories and events touching Canadians on so many levels, the program will span 2014 to 2020, including both circulation and collector coins. The Mint will deploy its skill, innovation and craftsmanship to pay a worthy tribute to all those who steadfastly defended Canada and its values, with themes such as ‘The Canadian Home Front', ‘Canada on the Battlefront' and ‘Peace and Legacy'. The Mint's commemorations for the First and Second World Wars will support those of the Government of Canada.

That is troubling news.

There are fine lines between commemorating and celebrating, between respecting efforts and profiting from war. I sincerely hope that the Mint takes that into account before pumping out a hundred coins offered at extreme premiums.

One or two special coins is great. Monthly releases are way over the top IMO.

I've had a chance to look at February's releases, I'd like to share my opinion on just 2 of the coins worth mentioning.

The 1 kilo owl is stunning! with yellow and black enameled eyes. I wish I had deeper pockets for this one.

2oz silver Contemporary art, mintage only 5000, 54mm diameter, custom box. The 50 drawings on the reverse are similar to a child's pencil sketch, but still attracitve. They've done something interesting with the obverse, a spider web effect covering the field only. I like this idea instead of the typical polished proof fields which show every speck of dust on the capsule or coin....especially with such a large diameter, the fields will be BIG.

Correction on the box I mentioned, it's a standard maroon clamshell but with a custom sleeve.

For anyone who has seen the Kilo Snowy owl........Whats the mintage? And does the coin feature just the head of an owl or the whole body in some type of scene? Thanks!

^^ Just the head with yellow enamel eyes. If I had the bank roll to spend I would totally pick it up.
