Realeswatcher: Time for a new topic header. Here is the FVI legend blunder coin: http://images.goldbergauctions.com/...=46&lot=1109Note the lower reverse - could be nothing ... not Sheffield peeling ... <BG> ... would love to examine this piece and take some spot XRF shots of this area at K-6 Reverse ... for curiosity sake ... looks like very good fabric ... Very nice, John!
We see very few errors on crown-sized pieces. Keep 'em coming!(Reminds me of this (listed) mis-spelling of the same King's name on a minor coin - Bill

I figured BillSnyder would comment on this (he's posted on these before)...
Thanks for posting, John... Interesting piece. Certainly looks genuine (think you're right about die crumbling... believe I saw one or two others w/a similar issue when reviewing them).

In terms of its possibility as a Sheffield - Certainly the Tower Mint (England) would not create a product like this that could be so easily spotted as a contemporary by the Spanish population as a signal of high quality counterfeits ...

Come-on folks, this coin is wrong.
Fake, maybe contemporary. Bad obverse and reverse.

That's was my point Westwood Arms in these other posts on different subject pieces ... every time we come across a debased issue sold to be by the Mexican Coin Company on a simple Chihuahua cast, a reversed 1811 on an 8R LVO on good regal silver and not a Sheffield, a counterstamp crude LVO host sold in a Stacks auction in which XRF results indicate good regal silver and not a Sheffield we get lazy and default these as a probable fakes and contemporary counterfeits whether by the owner or cataloger simply looking in a Krause book. As an example in the West Indies cut and counterstamp series these contemporaries and modern forgeries are agreed upon by all the experts and their default to contemporary or modern forgeries is generally universal and straight forward after putting together a decent collection which was sold in a Stacks venue during my collection disbursement between 2008-2010 ... the Mexican WOI series ... there has to be BETTER explanations here for these pieces ... during war torn Mexico during this time there may have been allowances, mint errors and the like ... for these issues. Its true there are hundreds and hundreds of Sheffields in TPG,s today due to ignorance but this is another type of ignorance or area we really not have looked close enough yet at in terms of what is contemporary, allowed and an unquestionable modern fake. Perhaps with some issues we may never know for sure as we move forward here ... John Lorenzo United states

Fake, maybe contemporary. Bad obverse and reverse. Rather declarative statement considering you were questioning/unsure about that 1772 1/2R, which is undoubtedly genuine by style and obviously a ground find... I'm guessing you're looking at the rough-textured surface (though not with those discrete pores as on the previous piece John posted), that weird split in the middle area of the coin (to the left of LVO), and that rim crumbling. All kind of odd features normally, but doesn't seem to be too out of the ordinary for what you see looking at multiple examples of these. What else are you noting about this piece?
