when a seller won't combine shipping. I won 7 coins from a seller also in Canada at an exceptional price. Shipping price per listing is $1.64 which is great. I requested an invoice expecting a shipping around $3 for an oversized stamp/envelope.
Invoice come back with a shipping cost at 7x the original shipping cost. Lets hope they send it with tracking otherwise they are definitely making up their money on my deal!
Oh well. Live an learn if it shows up with an oversized stamp they will get a couple less stars on the shipping cost.

I would have asked the seller first, but that's just me.

There was under 10 minutes left on the majority of the auctions and they were selling below spot price. Took the chance and it bit me. Live and learn :D
I mean I shouldn't really complain even with the non combined shipping I still only paid 16x face

Okay, I see, that's not bad. I personally would have combined shipping for you, but that is also just me.

Definitely sounds like theyre trying to make up for the auction with the shipping price. I bet they all show up in the same package.

Yeah, without confirming before it's a risk. Sounds like you did ok anyway.

I use to ask the seller in advance, at least it doesn't matter if it's really cheap.
I've just asked a seller if he combines shipping and this is his one line answer: "i don't change the price but I will send it all together in one invoice".
So, I guess he doesn't ?

Hate sellers like that. I always combine shipping whether asked to or not.

Did you ask them to combine the shipping afterwards? I was in a similar situation once w/5 coins and after I messaged them they said they must of messed up and that they did. It's worth a shot if not.

Maybe it is just me but unless the seller says they will combine shipping or it says it in the shipping costs section, I would never assume it to be so.
That being said, I've had two people purchase multiple things. Once I combined (sent them as a flat rate and saved the customer $3), once I did not (since I was taking a small loss on costs of shipping for one, I broke even with the two together).

Yes I asked if they combined shipping after I received the invoice and received the response 'No I am sorry'. I assume people combine shipping because it makes sense to send everything one package and adding another item to a package will generally not increase the shipping cost. When I sell on ebay I charge shipping to the USA at $4.15. This covers the price of the envelope, the light packet cost, and the cost of the flip or 2x2 I store the coin in for shipping. I make a small loss of $.20 (I have to change that yet). If someone orders two coins I could charge a couple extra cents to cover the cost of the second flip but I don't bother but outright charging double the shipping? I would be making an additional $4 profit that is meant to go to shipping. My goal is to get return customers that spend way more than that and bid more heavily in the future. I don't mind losing a bit of money if that customer comes back and gets in a bidding war with another return customer and drives the price way up and that has happened already to me and I am still relatively new to ebay. If you are not prepared to take a loss for a coin then you should not list it at below what you paid.

Hey try this one on for Size. Last weekend I saw an auction for 3 old large cents. It had 4 min left and no bids price was 3.99. The way no shipping price for Canada, it said may not ship. So I thought what the heck, they wouldn't be more than $4 for 3 lge cents. I won, and was told they couldn't get me a rate until Tuez, their post office was closed. I didn't think anything of it, they seemed nice enough via 2 messages they sent. So Tuesday night I look at my cart, they want to charge 8.99 for shipping 3 large pennies. Next day I wrote back, politely asking them to lower the shipping to $4, as I explained it couldn't cost this much by first class international, and that it gives them tracking for seller protection per ebay rules. I next get a response of this is what the shipping calculator says, I replied to check with there post office, I'd gladly pay $4 but not $8.99. s I just paid $12 to receive 1.5 lbs of coins from Washington. Next response, I've reported you to ebay and I get an unpaid case opened. So far it's where it's at. I need to call ebay a out this. Their shipping is highway robbery. So from now on, I'm going to check shipping in advance. This is the first time I've run into a seller who's unreasonable with shipping. I can send the same 3 coins from Canada to the states for a $1.22. I had one seller tell me it's a government rule that coins exported from the US need to be insured, if not sold by a dealer. So he indicated he was a dealer on the customs form. Has anyone heard of this US law?

This thread so much confirms that adding the mailing cost to the item is great for the buyer's, buying experience. Especially the buyers of multiple, small cost items. And they call it free mailing!
