I can't believe we have run out of things to discuss with the HOP coins that we are now making up ridiculous scenarios to get into a frenzy about... Really? Here we have a set that the gold sold out almost immediately, the silver is on the verge of selling out and a set that is totally unique in the history of US coinage.... ...and we need a "what if" ?

That is crazy, the mint striking more due to demand. Once the original mintage is stated, struck and sold...tough if there was not enough to mee the demand. That sounds like "misrepresentation", especially if the value goes down...not that I made my purchase for profit.

basebal - I tend to agree with your take. They have a winner and the worst thing they could do would be to issue more coins. That said, I also think you end up with a greed factor, and it does appear to me that the mint has turned into a profit center and ignores the numismatist more often than not. I am not an advocate for more coins, but when you see them quoting the 2005 sellout because of the increase in coinage it does appear they are trying to frame an increase in mintage based on precedence.
I think it would be a terrible idea - but I also think they are leaning towards doing it.

I assume I'm not the only one that status says "backordered. Expected to ship on 04/03/2014."? It has been stuck on that since 4/2.

Quote: That said, I also think you end up with a greed factor, and it does appear to me that the mint has turned into a profit center and ignores the numismatist more often than not. Which ironically would destroy their future profits. Showing that mintage limits mean nothing will basically just assure that never ever sells out and shrink the already small modern market. I dont mind that they did it with the Marine one, I'm happy to take the hit and have the future valued destroyed so Veterans can get the coins that frankly they earned, but it should only be done for things like that. Hopefully the mint realizes their cash cows are really dealers and resellers. Ticking them off to accommodate a few people wouldnt be a wise business move. I strongly believe the Civil Rights sales are so miserable because the Girl Scout coin performed so poorly resellers greatly scaled back their orders. This one probably could survive another 100k dollars without much impact, but I still be youd see orders canceled from people being annoyed by it and I really dont want the mint to get the impression that its okay to do so. Things that take some effort to get are more satisfying when you get it, quick sellouts are about the closest moderns get to having to hunt for something. Quote:Is 3-4 pages of sellers on ebay with these coins a lot? Not really. The Baltimore labels are getting such a massive premium almost everyone that got them is selling right now. Once those end up in the hands of people who paid full value for them youll see less of them of coming back to the market. Plus they all have a ton of watchers that far exceeds the supply. Once the non first pitch hit ebay itll be pages and pages of listings likely with a good turn over rate

Some new sales figures are out. As of this morning theres only about 30k dollars left to be sold, the half dollars are over 150k in sales, and some reports state that the mint took 61k in sales for the golds meaning some people will be getting wait listed that thought they got their order in

I'd suggest if anyone is waiting (for whatever reason), you might want to order in the next 12 hours. These have been selling at a pace of 25,000 a day and with 91% sold - I can't imagine they'll see another 24 hours.
I am actually pretty excited about this set - it will be my first complete set of commemoratives. (with a few extras for gifts).

This is my first complete set too. One of my orders had all the cancel boxes disappear today even though the gold had a back order date at the end of June.

I agree that these coins are really cool, I just received a $1 PF70. The NGC holder is double the thickness of the regular holder. BTW the slab does not fit in the NGC storage box for 20 slabs. The ebay feeding frenzy continues on the Opening Day Releases and First Pitch Baltimore Holders. Its all blood and guts ($$$$). Charging 4-5K for the $5 gold that was purchased for $425+NGC holder, that's an 85% profit. The markup on the silver and clads are similarly outrageous. Reminds me of the Buffalo RevPR ANA Chicago Release. Deja vu......... I read that they sold about 200 MS and 200 PF $5 gold coins at the Baltimore show but does anyone know how many silver dollars and halves were distributed by the US mint at the show? Also does anyone know what the regular (non-first Pitch)PCGS and NGC holdered $5 coin will sell for? $600-700

Probably at least double for graded golds. Not the 4-5k they're bringing now but they sold out in a day. No one seems to want to be the first one to price them. Itll also depend on how well the did now that they're being pushed out the door as fast as possible

Pre-Sales for non-Baltimore coins have been going almost since day 1. Currently I see the 1$ coins selling on avg $70 - $80, but have seen some go over $100. The 70 graded Baltimore coins go for 7 times as much. ($500 - $700).
I suspect that most buyers now will not come back for more coins, so the # of people that want the coin is diminishing, but these prices are BEFORE silver sells out. One can't help but think there will be a bump in price when silver sells out, and, based on my extremely limited experience, might these coins be going for 2-3 * mint cost in a year?

New sales figures as of 9:30 a.m. today, April 7, have the Baseball Silver Commemorative Coins at 366,340, or 33,600 shy of the maximum 400,000. Demand remains strong with 137,815 more sold since a week ago, suggesting the silver coins could become unavailable very soon. There's no chance they will not sell out.
