@Foxwoods- maybe this is why mine has been "In stock & Reserved" for the past few days and hasn't been shipped....

I would imagine that the mint would want more proof than that before haulting everything to go through all the boxes and double check. But there are reports nothing that doesn't get shipped to day will be shipping this week as theyre doing "inventory" so I guess it possible.
I just got my Uncirculated Halfs today, they also look fantastic but the quality is the usual for a Denver commemorative half. 70s could easily be at a big premium for this one. They all still look good but only 4 of 10 would be worth sending in

4 in 10 would be about the Denver mint average. I really wish they would take a better approach to handling commemorative coins. Some want them to mint proofs... and I scoff at that idea.
I am waiting on my 1st set of Silvers which have shown in stock and reserved for a few days now - I expect them to ship tonight. I am really looking forward to these - from the reports I've seen they are both winners.
I don't think the gold coin will rise to the level of an error. I think it will end up being a bad die or some other anomaly - that won't be classified as an error.

The discoverer of the mint "error" came forward on the MNB site. He never took the coin out of the capsule. As you might know, the capsules on the BBHOF coins are convex/concave depending on whichever side of the coin you're looking at, and like eyeglass lenses add a level of distortion, which is probably what happened here. Reminds me of the matte proof quarters from the 2013 LESPS everyone got excited about and worked up over, until they removed the coins from the holder, only to discover poor quality plastic and plastic dust inside. The discoverer wanted to alert the other bloggers to check their coins for a similar repetitive error, however, as the LESPS brouhaha showed, it does more harm than good not to throughly check everything, particularly freeing the coin(s) from its holder to verify the visual qualities before broadcasting it to the collecting community. In this age of instant communications, things like this spread like wildfire easily.

In the case of this, and other commemoratives I suppose, are the coins produced in whole, or in part prior to the ordering process? If they are made in advance how are the percentages of unc vs proof determined? From past offerings I suppose. I'm guessing that the coins are at least partially produced in advance. If they're all made in advance, why so long to ship?

Obviously the ones sold at baltimore were made in advance, but from the shipping delays they didnt have a ton of them ready to go. The proof vs uncir all depends on what people order which is why they arent all made in advance.
Generally they probably do them in batches as supplies get low, with the quick sell outs of these though its likely that a large number of them will be produced at one time for the gold and dollars.

Howell - they typically press a large number of these in advance and are ready to ship on day 1. In this case less than a week passed before the 1st shipments went out which indicates they had a fair number already at the distribution centers.
Since these were also a made to order - it is a 1st come first served type arrangement. Where it gets dicey is the cut off on proof and uncirculated coins as you noted. There wasn't an established number of either coin to be minted. It appears the mint looked at the orders and established the 32,000 and 18,000 as maximums for each type of gold coins. We really won't know what the final numbers are for the proof and unc versions are until they are all shipped. That is across all the coins - gold - silver and clad.

I don't plan on any of my "in stock and reserved"'s to go anywhere this week...not because of the "error" but because of the inventory audit. If the error is confirmed the gold will be toast for awhile. My silver should ship next week...
On mintage....I would guess they made 10k of each gold type and 100k of each silver. The rest TBD by type order numbers.

I'm beginning to regret not getting the silver dollar proof.

Darth,
You can still have a chance. Just place an order.... get put on a waiting list.... you never know. Do it now and you have some chance. Once it's officially sold out, you have zero chance of getting it directly from the mint at issue price....

Quote: I'm beginning to regret not getting the silver dollar proof. I logged on to buy 5 of each and ended up with 5 separate orders totaling 16 unc's and 20 pf's and all before the waiting list...I succumbed to the frenzy

So does the US mint routinely over produce advertised mintage figures.
