Not routinely but it looks like they're taking the airline approach of overselling. They're probably expecting some cancellations from the delayed shipping. Then again their site is terrible at bulk orders so it could just be that.

With so many orders on the waiting list, it's just possible the Mint might to go the Treasury Sect'y to get the limits extended. It's happened before and since not all of the gold nor the silver dollars have been minted, it'd be easy to mint a few thousand extra. At the time the bill was passed, the Mint used the numbers from the Infantry and Star Spangled Banner programs which weren't that good. Typically they aren't in business to make rarities or scarce coins like the BBHOF program or the 2011 ASE set. They were just caught by surprise.

Actually the only reason the mint sells to the public at all is because of collectors. While they may not try to create "rarities", they might be better served to allow them to happen. So far the numbers don't warrant expanding sales IMO, and it appears to be more likely they are trying to over sell to insure the 400,000 total will have buyers when produced, as basebal suggested.

I have no issue with overselling a limited edition set BUT at least notify those collectors that they are on the waiting list.
It is very easy just to add to your cart and never see the waiting list notice...and if there are very few cancellations there are going to be a bunch of VERY disappointed collectors sometime in July....
For one of my orders I have received 3 "backordered" emails...it would be nice (in theory) for them to send a "your on the waiting list" email so it would be a surprise if you RECEIVED it rather than getting shot down by not getting your prize.

Well the mint website says my gold proof will is due to ship today. I await with bated (not baited) breath. By the way, which is better, to have a coin backordered, or reserved?

On another note, has anyone speculated that with the obvious success of the HOF domed coins that other "gimmicky" coins might be in the offing? Different shapes? Coins with holes in the middle? Perhaps a Miley Cyrus commemorative coin?

Reserved. My understanding is that means they have one set aside with your name on it.
Backordered (with respect to the waitlist question) means you are scheduled to get one in the future. The unknown is if you are waitlisted.

I agree with fox about the overselling. It's just not that complicated to put wait listed on there. They desperately need to get with Amazon or someone and figure out how to make a sales site that can handle volume. I also agree with Doug that the mint is best served allowing a rarity to happen. It's not really even a rarity it's just that demand is greater than the supply. Extending the mintage would be the worst thing they could do. Rarities are really what gets extra people interested in a series. Moderns already have the label of being to common and easy to find, perpetuating that not allowing demand to be greater than the supply just creates more poor selling products. As far as the curved coin aspect, the baseball and glove design was perfect for that. The eye appeal from a popular subjected is what's driving the interest more than the curved part. There may be something they could use it on again in the future, but they shouldn't start forcing it just to say they did a curved coin.

It does make one wonder what they would do with a football/basketball/hockey HOF type coin.

They really do not need the finding of an error to stimulate sales of the gold HOF coin...

I totally agree that the mint need to communicate better with buyers that on the waiting list. Instead of just notify them that the product is on backordered when the shipping date move, the Mint should specifically saying that the buyer is on the waiting list.

I think the idea of communicating the wait list status ends up being even more of a problem for the mint. Because you are producing and filling active orders, and then tracking cancellations, and then notifying the people on the wait list of their movement through the list...
I think if they over communicate the wait list status they'll lose a bunch of those orders as well, and kind of defeat the purpose of creating the list. It has to be a balance of teasing with a possibility and removing all doubt.
