Steve - I wonder if the shiny 2000 penny had just been at the bottom of a big jar for 14 years. Lots of people throw 1p and 2p coins into jars or those large size empty spirits bottles that you get in pubs. When they fill the bottle, or need the money, they take it to the bank or the nearest Coinstar machine and cash it in. I knew one elderly lady who saved lots of loose change in glass jars hidden all around her house - when she passed away (around 2001) the relative who cleared the house gave me some large-size 5p and 10p coins he'd found, as they were now obsolete.
