Perfect ! Thats awesome news Steve Did you get the 2p coins at a large store or supermarket ?

Strangely enough -speaking of 2014 coins I picked up another shiny 2014 5p .......people just keep losing them , earlier this week I had to run after a lady & give her 2 shiny 2014 5p`s she had dropped ....

Hi DaytR, Seen 6 2p,s so far, mainly from mothers Avon change - I've had loads of goodies from there :)

My 1p was at my local supermarket - it was sat outside the till.I spotted it and asked the lady to check it as I thought it should be 2014 - it was, and I swapped it for a rather worn 1971 ;)

That was very good quick thinking about the penny ! I was a bit surprised and fascinated that you swapped a 1971 penny , I have found that they are rare to come by these days , given that you said it was rather worn - was the date still visible ? Did it have any notable discolouration or PMD?

It had a clear date - looked typical for a coin thats been in circulation a while - but it was the only penny I had in my change so it had to go. Just checked the date before I handed it over. I do have quite a lot of minty 1971 pennies.

What are the hard to find years in the penny's? I always found 1976/77 hard to come by.

Interesting stuFF , I have never come across any minty coins from the 70`s or 80`s. Did you get the minty 1971 pennies in change ?

For pennies the other hard to find ones from what I have seen are 1973, 1978, 1982 ,1983 . Its interesting you mention 76/77 because I have struggled on 1976 2 pence coins (and 1991) , 76/77 pennies are indeed rare but I got one of each in the past 2 weeks but yeah they arent that common..... do you have any idea why ?

Few of them came from change checking, others from fleamarkets or coin dealers.

Not sure on why some of these dates are hard to get. Dont know the official mintage of those years. Do you?

Never found 1972 of anything in change - though I have a few of each from broken sets.

I just checked : the mintage figures are quite fascinating

Pennies:
1973 - 280,196,000
1976 - 300,160,000
1977 - 285,430,000
1978 - 292,770,000
1982 - 100,292,000
1983 - 243,002,000

2 pence coins

1975 - 145,545,000
1976 - 181,379,000
1977 - 109,281,000
1991 - 86,625,250

1982 was the lowest mintage of pennies since decimalisation ; interestingly enough looking at 2 pence pieces compare 1975 to 76/77 - I have found more 1975 2 pence coins in change than the 2 following years , I have also got more 1977 2 pence coins than `76 which leaves me scratching my head regarding the scarcity of 1976 coins - the only thing significant that comes to mind regarding 1976 is this small detail that apparently that summer was sweltering hot and in `77 Man Utd got relegated and the Queen had one of her jubilees but I doubt that would account for the scarcity of coins from those years ....or could it Its a fascinating phenomenon

At last - got a 2014 1p in change yesterday!

DaytR - agree with you about 1976 2p's - I was making up a set from circulation a few years ago for a Spanish collector (in exchange for some Spanish euros) and 1976 was the last one I got. I wonder if some of the '1976' mintage were actually dated 1975?

I daresay the 1977 2p may be slightly scarcer than the mintage figure indicates, because lots of unofficial sets were made up out of circulation that year by dealers and collectors - partly because it was the Queen's Silver Jubilee, and also because it was the first year since decimalisation that a complete set of all denominations from the halfpenny to the 50p was issued for circulation.

Awesome news HH & Rob

Rob - thats a very interesting observation regarding 1976 2p coins , could 1976 2p coins be the crop circles of the demical coins..... & thanks for your insight regarding 1977 coinage vis-a-vis the jubilee

I did get a cracking condition 2000 1p in my change today - think I may keep that one.

Awesome stuff Steve, I have never got any penny from 2000 or before in such a condition but interestingly enough every now and then I come across a reddish 1996 penny ......maybe your penny came from a set
