I was just informed by the credit union that they will start charging me to dump coins. I have dumped maybe $1200 in halves over the past month. Maybe $150 here, $400 there. Oh and a jar of $500 worth of misc coins (before I started CRH about a month ago). That is it. I've never dumped a full box of anything, and I've never been there mroe than once a week. The tellers are all super cool with me. The one guy collects foreign stuff. I brought him a Korean 1000 won bill and he's been super cool since. The thing that really gets me is that the branch manager gives me all the lines, this is a $80,000 machine, this is wear and tear, it cost us a lot of money to do this. But then, after all those excuses, he informs me that he found $180 worth of silver in the last bag. Ohhh that is why I can't dump here, it messes with your income. He also told me that him and his girlfriend ( a teller) regularly cherry pick the coins in the drawers. I figured if he was a coin hunter, he would be cool. I asked how much would be too much to bring in at a time and he said "anything more than a handful" would be too much.
Should I make a stink about this? This is the CU where I do all of my personal banking. I get direct deposit to there. I pay for everything with my debit there. I even just paid off a car loan from there. It wouldn't be a huge deal if it wasn't the closest branch to my house and the only CU/bank I can find where the coin machine isn't behind the counter. The only other CU that has a customer coin counter charges a whopping 10%, even for members!
I don't know if I should make a stink to a higher up about this guy or what. Maybe threaten to take my business elsewhere? Actually do it? What would you guys do?

That really stinks. Unfortunately it's their game and their rules. I recently had a problem with a local bank and was frustrated, but there wasn't much I could do about it except take my business elsewhere. I mean, you could always complain, but I don't think it would help you case.

I say complain about the manager. It's not like you just use it for a dump bank, but for all your business. A bank, especially a CU where you are considered by term a member not a customer, cannot just change the rules for one person just because it infringes on his personal agenda. I would ask to see where in any account setup agreement you signed that it says you are limited to using the coin machine and to what volume. Good Luck.

I just think it sounds like a conflict of interest. Not to mention, the branch manager is dating a teller? How is THAT not a conflict of interest?

That's a bummer, but unfortunately for those of us who are outside of the bank's walls, they pick, sort, and hold customers to certain standards. Generally at the discretion of the manager.

Quote: Should I make a stink about this? No, because the truth is that those machines are expensive to buy and maintain. People who dump coins cost them money, regardless of reason (it is not just CRH). Ultimately it is a cost/benefit analysis, and cost has won, hence the fees. That being said, you should just walk away. Do not threaten or make a stink, just go and take your account assets with you. If they care to ask why, then politely tell them why. They might make an offer; if not, then walk away. No sense fighting a battle you cannot win. Their playground, their rules. Better to keep your calm, and your dignity. I feel your time and effort are better spent finding a new dump location. Their numbers are shrinking, but they are still out there.

I would contact the higher ups about it. the manager sounds like not a great guy. bragging while he is shooting you down is mega weak imo. how much is he talking about charging you?

After re-reading, I did think of one thing you should do before closing out your accounts... confirm that this is indeed a new CU policy. If he is singling you out for the fee, then I would most definitely notify upper management (or a board member).

I have had trouble with my banks here in canada as well....I am going to tell yu what I would do if I was yu...Nothing....Pretend that conversation never happened....Maybe let 3 weeks or so pass first if yu liike before going to that bank...After that even if confronted by the fool,, say "What are yu talking about"....If he insists or gets right jerk about it- retelling yu'no dumps' (Ps in canada here we don't use that expression- so pretend yu don't know what it means)....Then go army on him - which means ask him " Can I get that in writing" ----Army saying for when given an unjust Order.....Hay it scares the crap out of an Army guy.......

Usually when things like this happen, it is because either the manager or one of the tellers are collecting/CRHing like us. They don't want us to screw up the flow of coins. They use the "wear and tear" as an excuse.
If it is the only dump bank for you, you should fight. For me, I just walk away because I have many dump banks available.
For one case, I did threaten to inform his boss and it worked. However, I still try not dump halves at his branch because he likes to cherrypick the half bag. I mostly dump dimes at his branch so he can have ample opportunity to cherrypick the half bag. If I have to dump halves, I would call ahead so he can look through the bag before I get there. By the way, I seriously think he just steals from the bag by not replacing with clad halves. But I don't want to stir up any trouble as long as he let me dump dimes.

Since it is a credit union, I would escalate, but first I would ask "What is an acceptable amount and frequency" . I would ask if this is a written policy and ask for a copy of it. Once you get this information, I would email his boss and copy him (you can find emails on line for most bankers at their site).
If you say nothing and just leave, you allow him to set the rules, if you at least bring it to light, he will think twice (if it's not policy) before continuing this attitude on the next guy.

I dump with the 10% fee for using the machine its still a good deal for me. I live in the #1 retirement community for 2013 so there is high percentage of old coins here. But do the math your average finds total cost is face plus 10% of the dump. Then look at the fair market value of the finds vs your total cost.

Get someone else to dump for you next time and see if they try and charge them. If they do, the person can just say no where did it say there is now a fee charged (unless of course there is). If they don't charge, well now you know you're being targeted.
I would never dump at my main bank though, I only pick up coins from them.

I've had a similar experience with a teller who was crh. I was denied $37 of silver dollars just as it was being handed over. I knew from the reaction of the teller next to mine (my teller was just handing over the bag when the offending teller intercepted) that she was skimming the silver coming into the branch. I raised a stink and the teller was busted, however I didn't get the silver dollars, and neither did she. Unfortunately I burned my bridges at that branch. As for using the coin counter, I don't understand the big deal. At my bank, there is a coin counting machine that allows customers to dump up to $1,800 a week with no charge.
