1879 Silver Trade Dollar - Coin Community Forum

Worx New Member United Kingdom 2 Posts	Posted 04/18/2014 09:29 am Hi Guys, found this 1879 silver Trade dollar in the attic, among a hand full of Morgan dollars(from my Grandpa's coin collection) a quick google search found some interesting facts, ie less than 1500 minted and also a lot of fakes. I've compared it to several images and it seams too good to be true. Obverse side looks like Type 1, Reverse left Type 1 but reverse right looks like Type 2...is that possible? It indeed is a rare date with about 1500 Proof coins minted (proof coins are coins that are specially made for collectors, not for circulation). The date looks very wrong to me. The date looks similar to this Chinese fake: http://www.aliexpress.com/item-img/...6088639.html How about the Morgans? Post a few of them to make sure they are not also fake! iontyre Valued Member United States 269 Posts	Posted 04/18/2014 10:21 am Odd, that certainly doesn't look like a proof coin (no matte or brilliant surfaces) and the 1879 was a proof only issue. Maybe it's just the photo... do you see any proof-like surface texture? Report this Post to the Staff
