Poll Question
I can't quite tell! The difference in value between 58 and 60 is about 300 dollars according to some price guides.

Would-You-Grade-This-Seated-Liberty-Half-Unc-Or-Just-Au?

I heard that hairline scratches can bring Seated halves down to circulated grades. This has a couple in the photo but seems fairly clean. I'm not sure.

What do you reckon?

I chose 58. I dont necessarily see wear thoguh. It could be MS, but I am not seeing any cartwheel luster on the obverse, which is concerning as there is ample cartwheel luster on the reverse....it looks dipped out with a scratch on the obverse. If it did grade MS 60, I would guess MS60 details.

Just me or is there something above the motto on the reverse? Not too knowledgeable about seateds but just stuck out to me. I said MS63.

It's a die clash.

It appears to be a variety 2 reverse which narrows it down to WB-103 and WB-104. I saw an example in the Heritage auction archives of WB-104 that has the same die clash. I can't say with 100% certainty that this is a WB-104. A close-up of the date and mint mark areas would help to confirm repunching in these areas.

The lighting doesn't help me decide if there are luster breaks on the high points.
I tend towards a "slider" (AU-58).

I lean slightly more towards MS rather than AU-58 but not by much. I wouldn't bank on a problem free grade though. The spotty toning within the folds of the gown and the weak luster especially on the obverse could hint at a cleaning or overdipping.

There appears to be some light wear on LIBERTY's hair, right thigh and the leading edge of the eagles wing...I have been wrong before.

Sure is a nice looking half dollar!

Reverse shows nice, complete luster across the fields but the obverse luster is impaired by comparison. The greyish area in the right obverse field could be evidence of friction which would bring it down to AU-58 overall. The brownish spotting on Seated Liberty is a distraction which might further impact the potential grade. I can speculate the coin was dipped in an attempt to remove this spotting and the luster has suffered as a result.

Without an in-hand evaluation I would not consider an MS price for this piece.

Wow! Thanks for all your responses! I think I've learned more about seated half grading from any of the guides I've been reading! :)

I couldn't give this one a Mint State grade. There's too much crud on the obverse to even have comfort with the originality of the surfaces; I'm left with the impression of a coin which might_just have been in the ground. It was a remarkably effective cleaning if that's the case, but cleaned all the same.

I think this has some issues and wouldn't grade problem-free.
