Here is one off the near top of my detecting find bucket list. To bad is wasn't a more rare Morgan, but hey I will take big silver any day! Edited by Jenicholson 05/13/2014 11:02 pm

That's fantastic for a dug coin! Along with that Seated dime. I'd say MS-Something. Can't pinpoint it though without better pics. Although, you either have a very large hand or a fake because that seems too small for a morgan. What is the diameter?

I am 6ft7 255lbs so big hands. Its real. I dug both those coins in Buffalo, NY. The soil there is amazing on coins even the coppers I pulled out where in good shape. My oldest pulled was a 1739 British Farthing, oldest U.S coing pulled was an 1802 Draped Bust, but it was toasted.

Nice find! I agree on MS something... I can't offer better than that with the pics. I hear you about the soil up this way though, I live in western mass and the one old copper I've found (US 1820 sm date large cent) is in unbelievable condition... Looks like it was lost soon after being minted. But again... Great find! For being in the soon I can't believe how well preserved it is!

Condition really is fantastic for a coin that's been in the ground. The permafrost must've preserved it.

Really great condition. Pics are small but I don't see many nicks in the fields.

Why did pics from my other thread replace these?

if you upload files under the same file name, the most recent upload overwrites the previous file

I rate this a solid MS-HIGHEST-RATING-EVER-FOR-A-DUG-COIN.

If you have ever spent any time detecting, and pulled silver out of the ground then you would know it holds up. I have seen folks in Mass pull reales out of the ground in incredible shape. How well an area drains determines how much a coin tarnishes. The seated was in a fairly wet area of an old park. I had a walker that I still cant get clean in an area that you will sink to your ankles, it was solid black. Salt Water is really terrible on them. This Morgan was found at fair grounds on a slight slope area leading to one of the parks.
