I wanted this to go along with the envelope I picked up earlier this year. The check: A covered mailed in 1886 addressed to his daughter Bessie. Stephen Peery was also President of the First National Bank of Trenton, Missouri which held Charter #3957 and opened for business January 9, 1889 and liquidated December 23, 1893. The FNB and the competing Grundy County National Bank of Trenton (Charter # 3946) liquidated their institutions---to form the Trenton National Bank (Charter #4933). -MV Report this Post to the Staff

GregAlex Pillar of the Community United States 824 Posts	Posted 01/20/2019 01:57 am I picked up two gorgeous checks last week. One is a bookend to a a similar check I have, both issued by the Treasurer of Pennsylvania to pay schoolmasters. The schoolyard scene really takes you back to the 1850s. The other one is also from the same year (1852), but further West. It's actually a bill of exchange, which is a type of bank draft. Because the mail was less than reliable in the 1850s, an original, second, and third copy of the draft was sent via different stage routes. Whichever one arrived first was cashed; in this case the second. Page, Bacon & Co. was a prominent St. Louis banking house which established several branches in California gold country; this draft was written in Sacramento during the peak of the gold boom. Page Bacon folded in May 1855 but since this was before the telegraph, the news didn't make it to San Francisco until June. There was an immediate run on the bank and the vault was emptied. In the era before the federal deposit insurance, many creditors and depositors lost considerable sums. Edited by GregAlex 01/20/2019 02:00 am Report this Post to the Staff
