I'm in Canada and planning a trip to the UK within 5 years. The exchange rate of pounds to our dollar is close to double, so I was excited to buy a bunch of 10p coins at par (800 for 80 pounds of value, easily divided and carried in our backpacks). Instead of bagging them and going to a bank, I was just going to hit a grocery store with a Coinstar machine. What is the fee percentage on average?

In the UK, are they in a certain chain of stores? Which ones should I look for?

Why not just take them to a UK bank and avoid the fee?

Unless you have an account at that particular bank they won't take them - then even if you do it's still a lot of hassle as they have to be bagged correctly.

Coinstar .co.uk have locations.
They charge between 8-9%

Banks often ask if you have an account with them, just reply 'yes' and provided the coins are counted and bagged, I've never had a problem.

It's a little late to ask now, I suppose, but... are they old 10p coins (pre-1992), or new ones? And does it make a difference (do the Coinstar machines in Britain accept old 10p coins, or reject them)?

The UK Coinstar machines will only accept current coinage I'm afraid.

and luckily my coins are the new coinage. I'm not going to a bank since I got the coins at par, even with losing a percentage at a Coinstar machine, I'm still ahead with what I could have paid. It's a bulky way to beat the system to save maybe $70, but hey, $70 CDN could be a couple of free meals in London!
