There's a member here in the first sub form - nickelsguy aka mike Marshall of Trenton ont. Hes been a warrior for several years of trying to rid ebay of this fake plague. If you google his name & fake many wonderful articles appear on him and his work. He occasionally sell a cd he makes of fakes and updates it. It currently has over 400 images. Mike buys the fakes as soon as they're made, so he can study and include the images on his cd. He works with an RCMP offer icer Sargent tony . In 2009 he was responsible for getting 5 Chinese manufactures of fakes booted off ebay . Look up topic of fakes here, there's many threads, even ones I've stavrted with nickelsguy has posted on. I believe mike has done a section in this yrs Charlton Nclt issue on fakes. It's been reported here it does have some ommisions due to lack of editing, I think they're working on a fix. On the topic of fake Canadian coins mike Marshall aka nickelsguy is the expert.

I've seen tons of these replica Superman coins for sale on ebay. I actually own the original ones, bought from the RCM and I want to buy a fake set just to compare them to the originals.

Is it legal to buy them?

P.S. technically all the sellers on ebay that I've seen don't claim them to be real but "replicas" and "plated". However, they do have a " CANADA 20$ Dollars, 10$ Dollars..." etc engraved on them so does that make them counterfeit?

My main concern is it legal for me to buy them? I dont want to get in trouble!

Thanks "pocket change 50". But I can't seem tom find "nickelsguy" in this forum. Can somebody get in contact with "nickelsguy" and ask him if it is legal to buy these fake superman coins?

Simple. any counterfeit Canadian coin is illegal to own in Canada, yet the RCM does seemingly nothing to protect us collectors.

@ John it bothers me as much as it does you and Mike Marshall. I just don't get it why it has to be such an obstinate organization and do nothing. I know Mike has tried his best to convince the RCM to take action. I really feel a petition sent to the minister of finance may be the only way!

John like you've pointed out so many times in the past, all it would take is one ph call. There's just no will at the RCM. It's really a sad situation. I enjoy Nclt coins for their artwork. These fakes just detracts from the enjoyment.

It just occurred to me, maybe this is the RCM plan, so we will buy direct from them or their network of dealers!! Maybe they've incorporated it into their marketing plan; it's the only way it makes sense!

If a coin has a denomination on it, and is a Canadian coin, copies/replicas of it that do not say so on them are illegal to import, own, sell, possess.

Here are a handful of pics pulled from the internet... 2014 superman is available and enough time has passed that the coins could already be in Canada. If the silver maples are any indication of the quality, someone who has never had an original in hand could be easily taken. I will never again buy a coin from a private seller.

Wow I didn't think fake 2014 superman coins were out already! That was incredibly fast. Thanks for posting images. It's a shame to hear you say, you'll never buy from a private seller! I'm a private seller on ebay, it's how I'm able to support my coin collecting hobby. There's many great private sellers around! A buyer just needs to know the specs of the coin he's buying. If there's no government packaging or COA's for cost under 2 yrs old then stay away from it. Don't be afraid to ask ?'S, a reputable seller, will have good answers. Yes do be careful!!

Pocket Change I feel your pain, I have been buying a couple of the coins I like and selling one to help fund my hobby. With the Superman coin I was unable to get one and now very worried to take such a big risk. Even when I know the specifications how can the coin be accurately measured and weighed in a plastic case?...

On the other side of this, I guess I will end up buying a select amount of coin per year and forget about selling any. The mint should wake up and do something about this, it has cost them sales with me at least.

Just wait until somebody at a bank takes a bunch of fake NLCT at face value, maybe then things will change.

@ Relic, when you get to 50 posts send me a message and I may be able to help with superman coins. I have a few extra and know some other trusted collectors too. Buying an extra couple to sell to help pay for the first coin is definitely getting more tricky.

I'm pretty astonished that at the current price of silver a counterfeit Maple Leaf can still be sold at €13. I presume the targeted market would be those who aren't paying enough attention or are too clueless to catch the word "plated" in the description.

Trouble starts when the unscrupulous buy these to dupe the unsuspecting buyer. When I made my first venture into Nclt coins was July 2012 a purchase from the coin show explaining the COA & packaging. Had it not been for that and then finding this forum, I could very well been a victim. I knew nothing of COA's or government mint role in Nclt coins.

Look at the one ad they're asking $76, that is not pocket change, it's getting pricy. I have seen the 2013 set sell at times over $200 and once at $400. With the changes at ebay, you can even warn the buyer now. Prior to may 2014, when ebay dismantled their coin watch program to report fakes to, I used to report a large number of sellers. When you could see a buyers I'd, I'd contact them and let them know. I had many positive responses from the buyers. After the changes in may 2014, I gave up, to much work and no success. It a battle I got tired of fighting. Maybe if we write the minster of Finance. It's a sad thing for the collecting community, when ebay disbanded there coin watch program. - it was very successful!!
