i have been selling on ebay for years, with over 1500 items sent and only 1 went missing, now in the last month I have had 2 letters go missing, and the coin inside was in a 2x2, wrapped in paper, so it wasn't obvious, and both were to 2 different people in Quebec.. Has anyone else been having this problem? I know without tracking there isn't much I can do, and I like to think the buyers aren't lying to me.. But what can you do other than give them a refund.

Not hardly at all. When they do, I call the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and file a report. I once used a remote blue box and the recipient complained he received my padded envelope that was sliced open and contents removed. He returned that envelope for proof. Now, I go straight to Post Office for mailing and always use tracking. The remote boxes allow a person to be alone with the mail for too long.

Out of around 200 items I haven't lost any. There has been a handful that have been misplaced and I've had to try to track them down, but I got them all eventually.

I purchased an ASE on ebay last month that was shipped via the USPS. The item was "lost in the mail". The seller had to open a report with the postal service and a week later the seller sent me another ASE.

I sold a nice BU Indian Head cent and mailed it on June 16 using ebay mailing. However, the tracking hasn't been updated since June 17 and the seller has not received the item. I've never had a coin go missing in the U.S. How long should I wait before contacting the post office, not that they'll be able to do much?

I would inquire with the post office now, it's over two weeks. Having a tracking number they should be able to give you some information. This should include when you cAn file an insurance claim. I've bought and sold over 800 coins on ebay in 2 yrs, mainly bought and only 3 have not made it. The majority or 95% was letter mail or first class international from the USA to Canada. My first 35 purchases included 2 envelops with bottom tears and no coin. One envelope even had all the packing materials still taped to inside of envelope. One thing I've notice with USPS and FCI postage, tracking points don't always show up, however, it does show when delivered. I hope this helps. I think only 2 lost packages is a fantastic accomplishment @ silverwolf I think 2 of my 3 sent lost coins were buyer scams. When buying coins I only had 1 fail to arrive, and 2 empty envelopes with bottom tears. I feel the mail delivery is very secure in Canada, with only 6 000 postal outlets.

@ Silverwolf what do you sell that goes by lettermail and what is the average value sent ? I occasionally will send coins worth $75 using letter mail if I know and trust the person. It's interesting to hear other people's experience using letter mail and how expensive of an item they're comfortable sending untracked. I struggle alot with, when does it make sense to spend the extra $10-$15 for tracking? I guess this is my biggest selling challenge, at what $ amount to send tracked!! I'd appreciate hearing others experience and opinions on this matter. I only sell to Canada /USA. It's a shame Canada Post hasn't got an affordable tracked option like USPS! I guess having a large land mass, coupled with a sparse population doesn't make it a feasible option. Postal rates make it difficult to compete with US sellers.

40-50$ is my cut off, because if it is lost I have to refund the buyer, and I have no recourse if it doesn't show up..also if you tell a buyer you will ship it but not be responsible for it not arriving(lettermail) you will lose everytime, paypal will refund there money..

After going AWOL for over a week my Indian Head cent did suddenly show up again in the USPS tracking system and was safely delivered. I would like to know where it was for that week, though.

I just had 4 lots of Rare Coin Review issues go missing. The seller completely stood by me and refunded all 4 of them, they shipped in one single box. I have placed about 15 previous orders from him on ebay and a couple after the missing ones all others have arrived fine. ebay claim denied me on two of the lots and found in my favor on two, even though they were all shipped together? ebay seems to have gone crazy! At least the seller and I get along great, and if the box ever shows up I will pay him the full amount for them. Was really bummed as he specially picked issues I needed to finish off my collection and it would have brought me down to just a couple missing ones too. Oh well I do have a line on some others, but I will probably end up paying double over my ebay sellers prices. I had one other package of some LWC (6 coins) never show up, seller refunded me then, that was in 2008, never saw them, and all packages go to my PO Box. I often get other peoples mail in my PO Box so I wonder if my coins ended up like that. Everything I've sold has arrived okay to my buyers since I started selling on ebay, back in 1997.
