I'm sorry, but I find this comment very disrespectful to those who served

The comment was extremely disrespectful, naïve and ignorant.

I don't believe anyone here meant anything disrespectful to those who actually did the fighting, they were victims as well and if you asked most people they would say they don't want war of any kind but why is it that we are still having useless expensive wars?

That is the question that needs to be asked. Follow the money and you will find your answer .

My Great grand father fought in WW1 and came back not the same man as when he left, I am sure if you asked ( now deceased) him about the "war" he wouldn't be asking it to be commemorated, only it to be a lesson in why we should "not" be having wars.

I am not a fan of the mint commemorating wars but when I say I wont buy any war coins its not to disrespect the soldiers but it is disrespect to those who engineered the wars (for profit) to begin with.

Let's clear up any misunderstanding some of you seem to have.

My comments were about the design of the coin which I do not think does justice to the mint's title "100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DECLARATION OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR".

No disrespect was intended towards the brave Canadians who served!

Also according to the Coin Community rules: "Personal attacks will not be tolerated. Debates are healthy and thought-provoking, but they must remain civil."

I'm not so sure CC-Ottawa calling my comment "extremely disrespectful, naïve and ignorant." was not a thinly disguised way of attributing those adjectives to me personally.

Fortunately, we Alces alces have very thick hides.

War of any kind is sad! It's the common people who sacrifice their lives, so the rich will prosper. The Great War started when the arch duke was assinated. Sorry for spelling mistake. We just need to look at who directly profits from war. My mom tells me my great grand father never talked much about being in the Great War, but would show his grand kids how to march like soldiers. My son's generation is so far removed from the realities of war, they think it's a fun thing to play on video games. There's no understanding for the personal consequences of war.

i don't think the comment was MEANT to be disrespectful towards anyone... (well maybe the mint?)

it is sometimes hard to judge someone's tone when reading words. and can easily be taken the wrong way. with 17 years of experience in the Royal Canadian Navy as a sailor though, I had the opportunity to go oversea on a few deployements and what really gets to me is when someone says that we are on a "Cruise"!

i really cannot stand the comparison. I would love for those people to come onboard for a few days and work 20 hours a day while dealing with seasickness.

now, to go back on the coin, I am from quebec, sailed by a few times, and I thought the coin was pretty realistic and fairly easy to figure out. granted, having a better view of the rest of the ship would have distinguished a little more from any other sail boat. but for me the big thing that are stoppign me from getting this one are: obviously the price, and the size. I just have a hard time considering those big round as "coins".

Thank you Dominic for your assessment. You being a former Navy man makes your comment even more appreciated.

Also thanks for your service. Our Canadian military deserve more respect from all.

By the way, as you pointed out it's very easy to misinterpret the written word. This is particularly the case on public forums where posters often don't take the time to read carefully and react with little thought.

Another problem is that sadly, some folks just lack a sense of humour... (Insert joke here.)

to all of you, it is really nice to see that at least some people do appreciate what we are doing. our current government sure don't.

NuMoosematist: I have read enough of your post to know that this wouldn't have been typical of you. I mean I am not always in agreement with you, but you usually have valid points.

By the way, I'm still serving and not former sailor... at least not yet! lol maybe in 3 years once I am eligible for my 40% pension... we'll see then...

Moose there was no misinterpretation of what you wrote: "our soldiers enjoying a cruise". I read that carefully several times and gave it a great deal of thought before posting my comment. I rewrote and deleted my reply several times but I simply could not in good conscience let your words slide. Quite frankly, I expected that you might have recognized your poor choice of words rather than trying to rationalize them. I actually thought Commens response was essentially the same as mine though admittedly mine was more direct.

You may feel that you were inserting some humour but it simply was not funny and I, for one, am not lacking "a sense of humour". Nothing about our soldiers leaving their country for war is humorous. The fact is that many never returned, including two of my relatives who are buried in France having never seen the end of WW1. I hope that you can appreciate that the idea that they were somehow on a pleasure cruise is distasteful to say the least.

I can assure you that those soldiers were not enjoying anything about going to an uncertain war in an uncertain land. Nor were they out for a cruise. I also believe that you know that.

No matter. Time to move on and get back to discussing coins.

@CC-Ottawa

It's ridiculous to presume that I literally meant that our soldiers were on a pleasure cruise when they left to serve in Europe.

I was commenting about the design of the coin.

Without the mint's explanation of what the coin depicts, there is no way anyone just looking at it could possibly know what is supposed to represent.

There is, was and won't be any comments coming from me that denigrate the sacrifices made by our men and women who have served, do serve, and will serve in the Canadian military.

Now, I hope I have set the record straight.

P.S. CC-Ottawa, please don't patronize me anymore. It's unbecoming for a Redblacks fan.

Don't know. Unfortunately 2009 was the last year for the Canada Day quarters series.

Hey fellas,

Cheers up - its Canada's Day - which means most of us have a day off in the morning - and given the hot weather - at least in the Southern Ontario areas - cracking open a cold one or two is a must.
So chill back, and enjoy your "free" time in a relatively "free" country, and, if you care to, reflect on how super fortunate we are, to call CANADA our home. (as I am sure you all do)

NuMoose, in my humble assessment, was being nothing more than a pure classic Numismatic critic on the newly minted $100., silver coin commemorating the start of the Great War.
I certainly welcome such honest commentary on coin designs...its why I check in on this forum whenever I do.

CC, I don't see his commentary on the newly released over-priced, hefty Gaspe coin as any kind of negative attack on the navel personnel depicted on that coin. I think its clearly obvious to all of us that the men on those ships heading overseas were not in some cruise-like pleasure boat - heading through the tropics for sun and surf.

Me thinks, that NuMoose, like most coin lovers, want nothing less that great designs and superb images on coins, especially more so this year, when acknowledging the 100th anniversary of the tremendous efforts of Canadians in WWI -

Canada's contribution to that great war was nation defining, as was the contributions in WW2 -

NuMoose, I sense, like myself, and all of us, - desire from the MINT to get it right, in regards to commemorating those precious heroic Canuck souls. And, so far this year, I really like what I've seen in regards to RCM WWI coins.
Not so pleased with the D-Day design or the women assembling plane image.
And, the newest $100., could have been better designed and I would have preferred it to be 1 oz.

Be it navy personnel, fighter pilots, or ground troops, the MINT has a major obligation and responsibility to deliver on this theme this year.
It clearly appears that many coins are still to come. Wait until the calendar approaches November 11.
I hope they do them all justice in this regard.

Here's to the brave men, women, and not to forget as well, the fathers and the mothers of those who gave the most to allow our nation, to grow, thrive and prosper.

Cheers again, coin lovers.
Happy Great Canada Day.
