Quote:All you need to do is compare the 7 and 2 in the date to every single other 1872 IHC minted (there was only 1 die) and it'll be obvious this is a counterfeit. You'll find them available for about $1.75 on Ali Express. Please don't continue with this sale. You are committing a Federal crime by offering a counterfeit under false pretenses.

Here is a closeup of the date from the ebay listing from the OP, Compared to the date on one of my coins that is in my Registry set. There are many differences in the date.

Excellent photos. First thing I did was to go to Heritage for a look-see.

Still posted on ebay, I along with several others have reported it. I used ebay directly, and our (supposedly no longer working) CCF report link. This is not a good sign for ebay lately, I've been seeing a lot more fakes posted for auction, especially in the past month or so.

I reported it as well through the ebay link. I also sent the seller a message that it's a fake and included a link to this thread. It doesn't appear as though ebay wants to protect any thing other than their revenue.

I'm thinking it's time to compile a database of known counterfeit sales which ebay has been informed of and refused to act on, to provide the Secret Service. Or at least, that's what we'll tell them. No law against compiling such a thing.

I do believe that it is time to step up our actions to protect our hobby. How many people will turn away from collecting coins because of the influx of counterfeits? What do you think your collection will be worth if there is no market? We could be looking at the leading edge of an eventual disaster in numismatics if this is allowed to continue.

I had an exchange of two or three emails with the seller. He says he wants to do the right thing but the listing is still up there. I provided a link to this discussion. I did mention like others that knowingly selling a counterfeit is a federal offense. He says he read this thread but has a lot of money invested in this coin.

Quote: He says he read this thread but has a lot of money invested in this coin. So he threw away money. What sort of moral sense does it take to feel "better" about that by getting someone else to throw away money as well? I, for one, am getting sick and tired of telling new members that they just vaporized a big chunk of change because of unscrupulous sellers like this. And, seller, if you're reading this thread, I meant to use that word. You now know better. You've been shown conclusive evidence. Yet you still offer the coin for sale. That's not only unscrupulous, but very much illegal.
