That's an amazing score even if the Barbers weren't the majority!

</Sarcasm mode on> What? You mean you didn't tell the owners of the garage sale that their coins were worth so much more money then .10c each? How shameful.... Where is Western in this thread?
</sarcasm mode off> Great find, I wish I was so lucky.

But I can see an odd feeling if not making the other person in the deal aware that they are unknowing of value.

The owners were very aware of what they were giving me and I have helped them in the past. We went through each pack and it was them that told me the price. It was a garage sale but with people I was familiar with. I'm not a dealer and have probably sold 15 coins my entire collecting life span besides a few trades here and there. If there wasn't any major varieties that popped up I'd be lucky to make a 2-300 dollar profit. Something dealers can make if not a whole lot more at times on a single coin. Hardly a rip off situation in my opinion

Why? Because you found something good?
They could have all been worth a dime each, too. You were buying an unsearched lot.

Regardless if you found anything you made alot of $ in silver value. I'm happy for your steal, but I find it a bit messed up you taking advantage of them like that. I guess it's just a moral thing, If it were me I would have HAD to give them ATLEAST a $20....I mean comeon, how cheap are you!? lol. But again, that's just me!

OP.... Great find! Never can tell what you can get at the garage sales. I got some blue Whitman folders and albums at a garage sale with the key dates all "magically" gone (most likely the key dates were never there to begin with but you never know). They had the leftovers priced just a little bit above face. I didn't argue.
--------Hey Stampvirgin--------- I'm around... Little bit offended by your comment implying that I would question the buyer on something like this. In spite of what you may think, I am not an "honesty cop" on this forum. A garage sale find is a little bit different from "someone walking into a store and selling 40$ in silver quarters that COULD have been mistakingly cashed in or stolen" don't ya think?

Westernsky... where does the high ground stop? What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Treat everyone equally or none at all.
I think the OP got a good deal, and I wouldn't feel one iota of guilt over it. They got face value. If they had wanted more, they should have taken it to a coin or pawn shop. They helped someone, who has helped them. No harm no foul.
As for your other issue of someone "may" have cashed in stolen coins.... The end buyer is not responsible for that. If someone steals a gun out of your house and shoots somebody else, are you to be held responsible? That scenario follows the same lines of thinking.
If you find a roll of silver quarters on the ground, will you hunt down the owner? If you find a 20$ bill on the ground, will you hunt down the owner? My point to all this is that you can't hold the people on this forum liable or to any standards that you may have, and to suggest otherwise is offensive to them.

In reply to Stampvirgin....
There is no moral high ground or discrimination here. I congratulated the OP IN THIS THREAD and do not blame him for making a very good buy at a GARAGE SALE. ALL of us would have done the same thing, including me. There is a whale of a difference between a garage sale "find" and a bank, grocery store or Quicky Mart "cash in".
There was another thread here the other day regarding the accidental cash-in scenario. A guy mistakenly cashed in (at his bank) some dimes his late father had left him. The general opinion was to go back to the bank and see if the teller still had them. Really, that's about all he could do. If he inquired, and she still had them, SHOULD the teller be honest and say "yeah, there still here" or should she not say anything and squirrel them home for herself or for a collector friend? What would you want her to do if they were your coins? (but then again you'd never do that because your smart and would never make a mistake like an accidental cash-in, right?)
No, the end buyer is not responsible for someone cashing in stolen coins. However, if they knew they were stolen, or had reason to believe they were stolen, then it is a whole different story. If you are a pawn shop or coin shop owner try telling the cops "you didn't know they were stolen" and see where that gets you as they hand you a receipt for the rolls of silver they are taking down to the property room that you just purchased from some meth head for 10$ a roll because "he just wanted to exchange them for green money". (That's exactly why some jurisdictions have 2nd hand laws regarding property holding periods)
As far as finding ANYTHING on the ground would I try to get it back to the rightful owner? If it was labeled with an name or address, was obviously valuable (or a keepsake), yes, I would try to get it back to them. Everybody is different though, some would, some wouldn't. That's human nature and part of the culture of our society.
I am not holding people to my standards. I am asking "what ifs". If people on this forum don't like what I write or bring up (or if makes them feel guilty about something) --- then that's just the way it is. They can either find another forum more to their liking or not read my postings/replys.
