Hi,

A total newbie, but this coin was in a pile that I went through recently. I don't know if it is genuine or not (nor do I know how to tell). From what I could find on the web, the reverse is a glory of the army style and the obverse might be Constantine, but I couldn't find a perfect match for such. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Greg

Hello Greg,

Yes it is a genuine ancient coin of Constantine the Great, minted at Nicodemia (modern day Turkey), reference is RIC 188 like this:

Is it just me, or does the hair look a little odd?

I was wondering if some of the details of the legend and the bust have been tooled on the obverse?

Is this considered a 50 cent coin or a $50 one?

Hair seems consistant with a real coin.

Unfortunately, this is a 50c coin, if even that. They pumped out what seems like billions of these things - this is one of the most common designs from the period with the largest issuance.

Nice little coin, worn and not the best but still nice. Don't take any notice of the value put on it here, 50c would buy you a flat blank disk of metal nowadays or maybe half a coin, your coin at least is clear and not eaten away.

You could spend fifty or more on a coin of this type and have a very nice coin, but this coin has some things going for it. Centered, details all on the flan, legends and mint mark present.

I tend to like the two standards issues. There are a lot of them out there that are pure rubbish, but this one is better than a lot of them and is a nice little piece of history.
