I have had this bill for quite some time and always wondered what it is worth. Sorry for the partial image, my scanner would not allow me to scan the full bill. It is wrinkled but the edges are all sharp. The ink on the face is missing but the impression from the printing plate is visible.

I'm not familiar with the print process of bills but it could be worth quite a bit or could be worth nothing. Depending if this is a print error or someone used some chemical to remove the ink. Be the way the edge looks I would make a guess that its the latter. I would think the edges would be sharper and not faded like it was rubbed off. But I'm not sure of the print process so I could be wrong.

When I look closely at the bill, particularly along the bottom, you see different colors over top of the missing color. If someone washed the image away, they would have removed all ink and not just the color used for the face.

Not necessarily. Also another indication is that this bill is highly circulated. I my mind if a bill had an error this in your face it would have been snatched up earlier and be more crisp. Again this is just my option, you see bills from time to time on ebay with missing serials most of them just rubbed off via chemical.

Here is a new image. Normally you would see the dates which Sir John A Macdonald was Prime Minister. As you can see, it fades out then reappears. The colors in the background are crisp which would mean that the face was not rubbed out or chemically removed. My best guess would be an ink bubble.

I believe the bills are printed in layers so it would be possible to remove the upper layer and leave the bottom untouched. This is about people remove the serials and leave the background untouched. Not saying this isn't an error I'm just a little suspect based on the condition and how it is faded and not just missing.

What is the faded area on the building? That looks like a better example of missing color! No faded edges on the bottom!

The faded area is normal. When you hold the bill up to light you see a water mark, the water mark is an image of John A Macdonald.

This kind of ghost printing of bills need to be certified, try BCS or CCCS in Canada. Coin Cabinet has the same note in a 65 grade for sale on ebay. The condition of your note graded might get 400.00 to 500.00 or who knows at a auction

This is more than likely a ghost note. The portion that is missing is the Intaglio printed portrait. It would be very tough to selectively take the Intaglio off without affecting the underlying litho printing at the edges.
This is more than likely a legit error. Bring it to a coin show and show it to some dealers to get a second opinion. They may be interested in it as well.
