Wow,This kind of thing never happens to me! Someone at work had a small canvas bag filled with coins destined for the nearest Coinstar machine. Fortunately he remembered that I collect, and asked me if I wanted the coins for face value. Of course I said "Heck Yeah"... After all, it saved him a trip. Here's what was in the bag: 10 Ikes, 8 SBAs, 10 Sacs, 22 JFK halves (including 1 90% and 1 40%), 256 Buffalo nickels (about 3/4 dateless), and 587 cents (about 2/3 wheaties). Not a bad investment for $57.67.  |

Hey fistfulladirt,
I see you metal detect also (like me). I recently got a new Minelab Safari, which I am just learning. I found 89 coins (including a Sac), and a men's gold wedding ring in just under 3 hours this weekend. Awesome machine.

Wheaties: 1916, 1917, 2@1919, 2@1920, 2@1926, 1927, 3@1928, 82@ mixed 1930's, 7@ 1943 steel (including one "S"), 4 other S wheats, and the rest from the 1940s and 1950s (P&D). 3 wheaties were AU/BU with lots of mint luster. Aside from the wheaties, the rest were mostly pre-1982 coppers.

Regarding the Buffalo nickels, the dates so far seem to be common (mostly Philadelphia mint), but I am not finished perusing them yet. For the dateless ones, does anyone know if the Nic-A-Date restorer stuff really works? I figure if they are not worth much as is, I might as well potentially have some acid dates in my collection. |

nic-a-date will work (usually). however it leaves an unsightly "bur" mark.
i have soaked them in white vinigar with faily good success. it can take a few days - up to a couple of weeks.
the coin will get a dull matt finish look, but at least you can identify the date in most casses.
its kind of entertaining - too.
