Quote: maybe its a token from a game That's my guess. It was a fun find, and well worth the $.05 that I paid for it.

That's pretty nice. No idea what it is, but I'd keep it if I came across one. Not sure about a game token. Wouldn't that be illegal to make?

Oh... the magic of google turned this up from a few years ago https://www.cointalk.com/threads/ov...penny.10845/Summary: Someone found a similar penny. A poster claims it was soaked in acid to remove the plating and then pounded it with a hammer between two pieces of leather to make it larger (seems plausible and might explain the grain texture on it). Someone else tried that idea and there are pictures of the result.

Search for Texas Cent on this forum and that will explain what you have. It is just what you said, pounded between 2 pieces of leather.

I wonder if the person who did this did so intentionally to short the roll by 4 cents? Wouldn't be unheard of--I've heard of people grinding the sides off of cents to stuff them into dime rolls.
