My "lame numismatic claim to fame" is that two years ago at GSNA show I was talking with a guy who simply introduced himself as "Mike" about counterfeits until he noticed that I had a Morgan in the binder I just purchased and identified its VAM on sight. I exclaimed that it's amazing he could do that so easily and he said he had a good deal on a book about VAMs and that I couldn't get it at a better price. I said "Ok" but was a bit skeptical of the pitch until he pulled out one copy of "Top 100 Morgan dollar Varieties: The VAM Keys" by Dr. Michael S. Fey from a stack of them and asked me if I wanted it signed. :-) He really seemed to relish the look on my face when realization dawned. :-)

Sort of an opposite claim to fame. I could not even give away a signed copy of this book... not even our monthly coin club door prize draw winner wanted it. (Why I took this photo at a coin show in Edmonton, I'll never know, but this thread is perfect for it.)

Lame...ok.. I have a genuine 1804 dollar and I regularly use it as a pocket peace. Honestly though the rarest coin I've ever held was a 48 dollar and the rarest coin I've ever seen in person was some Morgan dollar worth 30K, forgot the year!

I don't have many, but my brother's friend's dad has a collection of Mercs that are all MS-66 FB or better.

Wow. A 1945-P in 66FB is a $15k coin.

To update on mine: last week I got a Shield nickel, with rays, from a 10 ruble bargain bin (under the current exchange rates, that's about 18 cents). Sure, the date is worn away, but still, that's a type I didn't expect to find for any money (this side of $50).

My Uncle put together a full set of Mercury dimes from circulation in the early 60's, most were in AU and MS, and promptly proceeded to spend them for face value a few years later in college.

Fun Thread! Let's see just a few of the numismatic experiences I've had... Become an ANA Life Member as a teenager, spent a week on an ANA Summer Seminar scholarship with Q. David Bowers in the 1980's, have attended more than 8 ANA Summer Seminars, am lucky to be friends with many ANA officials over the years. I have held all 5 - 1913 Nickels, and more than half a dozen 1804 dollars (all genuine), held 2 different Brasher doubloons. Took the very first VAM class at the ANA taught by Michael Fey, and Jeff Oxman. and got my name in the Morgan dollar 8 tailfeather book as a contributor. Handled many very cool coins as a dealer over the years, and helped many people buy and sell collections, also hopefully helped many collectors gain knowledge. Have drank beers with Rick Snow, Elliot Goldman (RIP), Michael Fuljenz, and many other "big time" dealers over the years, while listening to them tell fantastic coin stories. Was the Young Numismatist Convention coordinator at an ANA annual convention Found this little online community called CCF and joined up!

Some of the claims on here are not exactly "lame". My new numismatic claim to fame is to do with all the numismatic items I have saved in the past from being destroyed or who knows what.
