Found some differences in thickness and weight and wanted to see if this was common on this Kennedy half. Thanks.

The weight should be in the 11.50 gram range. So it maybe a little under weight.

Maybe minted on quarter stock? I have heard that that can happen.

The weight of the quarter planchet is 5.67 grams. No way it could be a quarter planchet. Is the outside edge in the rim, copper colored or silver in color?

The thickness of the rim edge is a function of striking pressure, a coin with a stronger strike will appear to be thicker than a coin with a weaker strike(look at the edge of a proof vs. business strike).

Yes I agree biokemist. I wasn't sure if it was a strong strike with more excess metal taken off but I will say that I don't see any hints of copper like the thicker counterpart...I don't know I guess I could look up other planchets for other countries we had of that year as a homework assignment of sorts haha

I'll save you the trouble, the US did not mint coins for any other country in 1968.

I saw there was a 1968 s Kennedy half struck on a Phillipines planchet and that there was some participation with Canada in 68'... Not saying I have anything based on this info but it does seem that we did some business with Canada and there were some composition changes of nickel and silver in 68
