It seems like a nice die break to me. Maybe some puddling of metal in a spot or two

Your coin is a Haxby PC59-361 Which means it has obverse die 36 paired with Reverse die E37. Obverse die 36 lasted long enough to be paired with two reverse dies, 37 was the first. If it is not too worn you should be able to see some slight doubling of the 9 on its right side, it is not a rare variety but still one of my favorites. Here are links to the two respective pages in the online catalog. Enjoy! ed http://www.vickycents.com/rev-e37.htmlhttp://www.vickycents.com/obv-o36.html

Nybird just a further question, does this mean the coin is a 'repunched Narrow 9' variety? I looked on the Haxby Catalog, and it appears the 9 has been repunched (major or die defining).

Yes it is a repunched 9 variety, but it is so minor and easily worn off that I do not think it is in the Charlton catalog. Since all the 9s were punched into the die by hand in 1859 quite a few show some signs of repunching, as well as various spaces (high, low, far, near etc) Either way it is yours and it is cool. The term "Die defining" in the Haxby Catalog refers to the ability to ID a specific die just by using one point of reference, in this case the repunched 9 on decent grade coins is so unique that if you see it you for sure have reverse E37. The 1859 cents are a fun collecting nitch, I have collected as many die pairs as possible and at this point I am still short 8-9 known die pairs.
