Hello everybody. Here is my newest purchase - 1787 New Jersey, Maris 38-Z, I think. It is R-4 coin, in AG-G details grade, with mint error (?). Unfortunately, coin was very very very hardly polished, surface is almost like a mirror . But... I bought this old copper for 7$, so I believe I did not overpaid and my new coin is worth more than melt value. What do you think? Thank you for all your opinions.

Strange to compare a NJ copper to "melt value". But yes it is certainly worth more than $7.

I agree with you TDC - a N.J cent with a legible date for $7 is a good deal. Let it retone naturally and it will look a lot better.

Few questions... 1- I assume these are rare? 2- how much would one normally cost? 3- would they normally be in that condition?

Id love to have a NJ coin being from jersey. Thanks

Although the coin in question is in pretty rough shape, these colonial coins allow much more "forgiveness" when it comes to condition "problems". A coin like this would be worth at least $50. I have seldom seen any NJ copper priced below $50. Anything cheaper would be hard to identify as a NJ copper and likely have serious corrosion.

Thank you for your answers. I bought this coin at auction - almost without description and with very poor pictures, but I thought it was worth a risk.

GERMANICVS - I hope this NJC will retone, because now it looks like brand new copper cookware. For now, I am keeping it in air-tite capsule, but maybe it will be better to keep it raw?
