Don't know if Bob has seen my collection,..but I do know that Brian has,..
.. and I do know that if anyone does, Brian has probably had the most expert experience seeing the best of the best of past great collections..(Norweb,..Pittman.. etc..)
That being said..he also used to say that on any given day he might give a 55 or a 62 to the same coin depending on how he feels...and that's not good enough for me...
Times change and I will follow SPP's valued guidance along with a few other grading experts (Rob and Rob and Jeff and Gerry and Jaime and Mike just to name a few) to see my collection properly graded ...and not just higher graded..
Just for fun I will start a thread posting some of my 5 cent vickies and also hope that others here post their 5 cent silvers along with mine,...
...and will hope that all here also contribute their valued opinions and coins to this 5 cent vicky thread..
This is a great and necessary discussion.........We all learn from it..

The grades au55 to ms62 is the toughest to grade consistently and accurately over time. Brian at ICCS is 100 times more consistent than PCGS. There are far more horror stories from the US TPG's than from ICCS. |

Although a few ICCS coins are showing up on Heritage, my guess is the major auctions has not accepted ICCS, I think it's hard for a new collector or major auction house to believe Canadian TPG operates without a website. |

Devlec...If you think some of your coins did not receive their proper grade you should probably re-summit them to ICCS for regrade. Then you will have a better assessment of the correct grade of you coins in question. If the coins were certified many years ago there has been some "grade creep" and possibly the coins will grade higher today. Good luck with whatever you decide.  |

It's not going to happen...Too much hurt...... Why do you think that I've been away for 25 years..? I was planning on acquiring "the best" available at that time and was then told that they're "just OK"... so I parked the collection and moved on to other interesting endeavors.. Many (actually all as mentioned above) have said that a wrong was enacted ...and this CCF Forum got me back involved (thanks Roger) ,..and I'm moving on...to PCGS.. BTW..Enjoy the 5 cent pieces that you're about to see...  . . . Edited by DEVLEC

I do, and always have, prefered Canadian (ICCS) grading methods, with the exception of red copper as mentioned by SPP. I believe that technical merits, not eye appeal, should determine grade. Savvy collectors already pay whatever they think a "pretty" example is worth, so why entrust PCGS to arbitrarily make that decision and wrap it up into the assigned grade?
That said, PCGS dwarfs ICCS in brand recognition in the US. For truly esoteric coins, the exposure and potential interest provided by a PCGS slab south of the border cannot be ignored when it is time to sell.
"Buy ICCS, re-slab PCGS" makes a lot of sense to me.

I live in the States and am a ANA member. I submit my coins to NGC/PMG since I can without paying high fees to PCGS. I have sent coins to ICCS in the past but don't want to bother with custom declarations about whats in the box and what's it's worth as a red flag to everyone who touches my mail. I am satisfied with the NGC/PMG grading of my Canadian coins/banknotes. I have noticed at times that ICCS seems to ignore coins that have been cleaned and that their grading standards have slipped as all TPG's have. But, I would prefer a NGC holder that says UNC details as opposed to a coin that is graded MS60 and has obviously been cleaned but not noted on the holder. Plus, I do prefer the hard holder for security. |

I live in the Chicago area and there is at least 1 show a year that NGC, PMG and PCGS show up at and will take your coins/banknotes at the show to be graded within a few days or mail them back to you in a month or so.
I like saving the postage and knowing that the company has the coins in their possession.
Does ICCS do this at Canadian shows?
If not, perhaps they should think about this as an opportunity.

Devlec....will you be submitting your coins to PCGS with the ICCS cert grade or will you crack them out first and submit them to PCGS raw?

I don't like what I see on the certs.
...so I will definitely 'at least' crop the corner grades out..Maybe I'll crack them completely...
Right now,...I consider my coins to be held in very expensive soft plastic holders ..and no more than that..
I got the discounted volume price,..and received a discounted grade at the same time..IMHO..(not at all happy)

Devlec has some really nice 5 cent coins. I have held some and just laughed at the grades on the pouches. We sat for an extended time over 2 days looking and comparing. There was a day that ICCS was the standard , but those days are gone with inconsistency. Dealers will tell you different due to inventory only.

Thanks nickelsguy ..!! ...for giving me so much of your valued time. I've had the opportunity over the last year and a half to have many experts in their specific numismatic fields comment on much of my collection,..and they all have said the same thing. So now I have to believe them and take the proper steps ..to try and get it right. Roger and Jaime got this started while I was in Montreal and it then moved to TO with Mike and Jeff and Gerry and Rob (from California) and Rob (from Ontario) and a few other serious players.. Greatly appreciated..to say the least.. ....and now it's time to enjoy our favorite pastime.."Looking at Cool Coins..!!"..and not dwell on the past.. |
