Thanks again for the help with the 87. I believe this 85 is a 9C. Even under the microscope I can find NO evidence of the clashed n, but the die cracks are all the same, the polish lines between the eagles neck and wing are the same. The polish line in the ear lacks the barb at the end, but same length and placement.

Did I hit this one?

The VAM-9 series is getting kinda complex these days. As you might know, VAMs were not originally designed to describe individual die pairs, but to describe die characteristics. I'm thinking it was Van Allen and Mallis' opinion that individual dies were being produced with such precision that it'd never be possible to accurately identify them all. As research has piled on research, more and more individual die pairs are being identified and it's being proven that given VAMs are, in fact, separate die pairs with similar characteristics.

VAM-9 is one such. It's still an "unofficial" effort, because the intent is to figure it all out and then present Leroy with a completed body of research to approve all at once, leaving no unanswered questions. Have a look here:

I saw that when I was going through everything. I understand what he is saying, but dont know enough to apply that information to anything. Given what I can find picture wise to compare mine to, I am still thinking 9C.

After doing all the necessary clicking, I'm going to side with you here on 9C as the closest. Understanding that the actual digits we use for this VAM will probably change in the future. Write it on the 2x2 in pencil.

Yeah, this is one where we can be pretty sure the sub-VAM will be changing.
Rest in Peace

dave700, thank you! I have never really checked my Morgans for VAM stuff. Now I gotta go through all my Morgans and see what else is hiding in my collection.

SRD, you'll never look at a Morgan dollar the same. I find myself looking for PUP's before I figure out what the grade is and always pass if it's a VAM-0. (VAM-0 is anything I find uninteresting)

I seem to recall you weren't exactly a stranger to VAMs when you first arrived. We're a pond, you're a horse. Don't blame me if you're thirsty.
