VAM refers to different varieties of Morgan and Peace dollars.

The Morgan dollar is named after its designer, George T. Morgan, who designed the obverse and reverse of the coin.

VAM - Are the changes/variations were made by the designer or not ?

Why the changes have not been reported for many years before their discovery ?

To the largest extent, individual VAMs are not named for features that were deliberate on the part of the designer. Rather, they arise from those slight differences which happen between dies in production: minor incidents causing marks on the die, differing date placements, things like that.

It's only since the 1960's that categorizing Morgans in this fashion has been a deliberate effort, and the sheer quantity of differing die pairs known - this information has been available since the initial mintages - means the VAMming effort will probably survive both of us before completion.
