No worries as long as you are comfortable ...... I must admit I would not have posted any if it though. Requesting the opinion of others on a coin is fine but including personal details is another.

Thanks. I actually think it is buyers that don't give honest feedback on poor sellers that allow poor sellers to exist - different take on the matter I guess. If a guy who wraps coins in old plastic to disguise them, sends them in old envelopes cobbled together with myriads of tape and prints orange notes to boost feedback wants to take my family on in a legal stoush good luck to them. Perhaps he can have the penny back? However, way way off topic here - I simply came here for an opinion on the authenticity of a coin. And I got it, along with some good suggestions. Again, a good board - hope you let me stick around even if I play a bit differently to some in life.

Ring Visa and do a "Charge Back" Send the coin back to the seller. Easy simple solution

Yep. you r spot-on. Won't say anymore than Visa were very helpful. It seems I'll be ok to recover the money - but that doesn't make up for feeling misled, especially by an apparent "high-rated seller". I have softened a few bits - but that's as far as I'll go. If people don't speak out nothing bad ever gets fixed (and even then it mightn't). Anybody that looks at that listing and then the real coin, & don't see a problem with it, well...

I don't think you will have a problem with a "not as described case". Seems like a deliberate attempt to conceal the scratches, by blurring the photos. All his other listings have good pics but his 1925 pennies are blurry. My guess is he purchased a bulk lot of damaged 1925's and is now offloading for a massive profit. I would never consider buying a scarce item like this with such bad pics.A lesson learned but I'm confident things will work out in your favour

I think you have it figured out airgem - with one exception - I wonder if he got burnt with the 1925 Penny himself? Either didn't see the scratches (unlikely unless he's 90 with five cataracts) or bought them in good faith. I'm just speculating of course - could indeed be he bought a bunch of coins & now unloading them in whatever fashion may max his gain. I personally couldn't do it - I'd rather be sure the buyer was happy by being explicit about any problems - & if still unhappy I'd refund asap & pay all postage. Anyway - definitely lesson learned!
Ps. still haven't heard a word from him.

Guys, May I please ask one other question regarding the coin. On the obverse, look at the line that runs from the king's shoulder through the D right through to the rim? This is how all the ageing on this coin looks in the flesh. What causes a line of "ageing" like that to occur? I can understanding the shoulder wld "polish up"as it is a high point and rubs - but what about the rest?

Guys, I think there may be an earlier-than-expected resolution to my problem as the seller has now contacted me. The seller says he did not see the scratches, so it is a case of to each their own opinion on that element, as well as to the efficacy of communication. In any event the seller has said he is willing to refund upon return of the coin (it's going Monday express registered). I will provide a final update "when the money is in the bank" so to speak. Cheers & thanks again to you guys, Andy.

Penny goes tomorrow morning express to seller. Will update as soon as the money comes through - & if it does I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt. After sleeping on it I was thinking if he shifts huge volumes then maybe, just maybe, it's possible he genuinely could miss a flaw, even a significant one, once in a while. Perhaps the ebay sellers like The Unicorn have a view on this? Have you guys ever found you've missed something on a coin because you were selling a large volume?

I'm late to the party and all... but my 2 cents: 1: penny is genuine 2: seller should have disclosed scratches if he can't take decent photos 3: I have purchased from this seller with no problems 4: touch wood you have a satisfactory refund 5: YOU BID TOO MUCH. You not only bid a high amount but you then bid 2 more times to ensure you had the highest bid. A crook seller would have upped his bids to higher than your second highest bid. Even without those scratches the price is steep. I picked up on ebay a similar grade (and with a nice spur) for under $130 last month ( ebay item 161402785889.So you should have waited until you found a nice penny with clear images (or got into a bidding duel for my coin because I would have dropped out at well below $280). 6: All of us have picked up a few dogs at one time or another and it isn't just a noob mistake, I'm too embarrassed by some of mine

When I was worrying about my Penny I came across this and it may have educational interest especially for noobs like me. http://www.ebay.com/itm?itemId=111418804908It's just a Collector Penny the seller bought in July ($15.99 in cost - see photo below). Now for a noob like me I can't tell a lot of difference between this Collector Penny and the real 1925 Penny.

Looks like a fake. The letters in VS V are all wrong in their thickness. Would pass a superficial observation and is a reasonable fake. What does the reverse look like as most fakes get the lettering badly wrong.

I've moved this to a new post - hoping to get some great tips on telling the collector coins from the real coins. Andrew.
