Hi guys,

Wanted to share with you that I found the origin of the 1925 penny I bought on ebay.

It took a bit of searching but I eventually tracked it down - it came to the seller as a lot of three from seller brenton49 ebay id : 181469022148 (original single sale was ended).

& 400744338885 (lot of 3 1925 pennies sold to my seller in mid-July).

The first photo is the original from the listing when the penny was sold to my seller. It is unmistakably the same coin - see the mark down the king's shoulder to the rim. What's interesting is how much shinier this penny is in the hand or when I photograph it.

The second photo is a photo I took of the penny. Lessons I've learned to come...

Cheers,
Andy.

So, as a noob, through this buying experience & your comments & suggestions I have learned quite a bit:

- do your research, check recent sales of the same item, look at sites like downies, have a reasonable idea of value, set a limit & stick to it;

- don't put emphasis on the written description - photos are paramount. The photos must be super-clear & best if shot from differing angles;

- if the photos are poor ask for more. If the seller doesn't help out with additional clear pics then just don't bid;

- check other items the seller has listed to see if photo quality changes markedly from coin to coin;

- don't put too much faith in seller feedback (I'm not saying this is not an okay seller, rather that he missed some important flaws, & I bid relying on the written description & his 100% +ve feedback - I should have asked qns & asked for better quality photos. He might just deal in pristine coins - check the 1937 Crown he sold for $151 on 17 September (photo below - not a bad one) - farout!);

- use forums like this for information; &

- if a coin arrives after purchase that "just doesn't look right" when in the hand then do some more work. In this case the coin is not a fake but it did have other problems.

Cheers.

Guys, just letting you know the penny is back on the market - don't miss out...

In all seriousness, would this be worth $50?

Guys,
Told you I'd update when all finalised, so I am. Got ALL my money back including all postage, so seller did the right thing & kept his word in this regard. Thanks again for your advice & help - & lesson learned (luckily without too much pain).
Cheers,
Andy.

If somebody paid $151 for the crown based on that gleaming image then he was foolish. It has been polished to a high sheen and worth $20 (just above bullion).
Learn to spot the difference between polished coins and coins with a high sheen (such as coins struck from proof dies and chrome dies).
Also know how the coin is supposed to look and if proof dies and chrome dies were used for some coins from that year. Some years also had proofs struck with matte dies.
Plus the image looks like it was taken with a Doris Day lens (she had her movies shot slightly out of focus to hide her wrinkles and other imperfections).

Resold for $385

Will be interesting to see if it's returned again - if so could eventually crack $1k :)

New buyer obviously not happy - did put up positive feedback but it reads "Bad quality pics". I feel really bad for him - he shld demand a refund like I did. Paid $385 & IMO the coin is worth zilch.
