So, as a noob, through this buying experience & your comments & suggestions I have learned quite a bit:
- do your research, check recent sales of the same item, look at sites like downies, have a reasonable idea of value, set a limit & stick to it;
- don't put emphasis on the written description - photos are paramount. The photos must be super-clear & best if shot from differing angles;
- if the photos are poor ask for more. If the seller doesn't help out with additional clear pics then just don't bid;
- check other items the seller has listed to see if photo quality changes markedly from coin to coin;
- don't put too much faith in seller feedback (I'm not saying this is not an okay seller, rather that he missed some important flaws, & I bid relying on the written description & his 100% +ve feedback - I should have asked qns & asked for better quality photos. He might just deal in pristine coins - check the 1937 Crown he sold for $151 on 17 September (photo below - not a bad one) - farout!);
- use forums like this for information; &
- if a coin arrives after purchase that "just doesn't look right" when in the hand then do some more work. In this case the coin is not a fake but it did have other problems.
Cheers.
