Ag, that was a great read, ty for sharing some of your personal time here.

Two days ago I was metal detecting and found some copper lightning rod items, ran into a fellow today where I volunteer 3 days a week, now steady for about 16months. The fellow started to tell me about how he needed to connect a section of his lightning rods on a 1872 stone school house he bought a few years back. I had dealt with this fella earlier in the year on some old coleman camping gear. So I brought him to my car to show him 2 other connectors I found about a month ago, pure copper, he decided to buy these 2 off me for a for a couple a bucks. He invited me out to metal detect the property, when I got there we went right to his lightning rod wire hanging at the side of the house, turns out it's the wire he needs to fix the system. Well the piece I had found a couple of days ago was exactly what was needed with an extra 6 inches or so. I got my tools out and fixed it for him. Then sat and had a coffee a chat an I detected an hour or so. Lots in the ground and I'll have to go back for some good deep tones I found. Upon leaving he asked if I needed some stove pipe, well ya I said just bought a woodstove 3 days ago and need 5 feet of 6 inch and a damper. Turned out he had exactly that to finish hooking up my stove.

Funny how life is when you offer and do vs expect and take.

Sweet read! Thanks for sharing your story!! Is your wood stove for camping or for your house/cabin?

for my home and it should keep it nice and toasty this winter, after all it's said to be a pretty harsh one and one of the worst in many years. Perhaps even dating back to the seventies to compare too.

Well today.. was ANOTHER really really REALLY good day...

I went to one of my banks once again asking for anything interesting... the ladies were like "nope... no interesting bills or odd coins have come this way .... " I was just about to turn and leave... they know I like pennies but weren't offering what they had... so I decided to ask in case they overlooked that I like to pick up pennies just to hunt through.... "YEAH we have pennies...!!" the one exclaimed!

She proceeds to hand me $16.50 in pennies.... 3 rolls are marked George VI... the rest are RED RED RED RED pennies from the '50's 60's and 70's...

I couldn't get the $20 out of my pocket fast enough...

I go back to work (because this was on my lunch hour) and start looking at a few rolls and realized THEY'RE ALL MS! I then phone the bank and talk to the teller again and thank her. I tell her this is exactly what I would dream of and will be cherrishing these coins for years! She proceeds to tell me that the same customer also dropped off a whole other box of pennies and 20 or so rolls of nickles... I told her to put those aside and I'll be there at 4.

I am now just watching the clock slowly tick by.... but to help kill time I thought I would share this with you.. pics to follow shortly!

A great story, thanks for sharing it here.

I have a story, something that happened today. My neighbour was helping out another neighbour with some yard work. He is always talking about going on a metal detecting vacation to England. He was talking about the types of coins he might find. I excused myself and retrieved my Roman coins from the house. He was very interested in them and said he would love to find something like that for himself. I hope he does get to go on his trip soon and I hope he finds something neat.

Update: I go back to the bank and the teller has $65 worth of coin waiting for me. $25 in pennies where she says she knows she put a few other rolls from the same customer. And the remainder in nicklelsof which my best guess right now is that 10 or so rolls have MS coins from mostly the early 60's......today IS another good day!once the kiddies are asleep I will cataloge and make note of what actually was hauled in......

Update:
This morning my first stop was to the bank.. where I unloaded a LOT of my nickel dollars... I was looking forward to going to my LCS I needed some supplies but also decided to scratch an itch of picking up some older maritime stuff as well...

So I knew I needed to pick up some more 2x2's as I wanted to have these coins out of the rolls but protected so I could look at 'em. I decided to head down to my LCS and bring along a roll of the nickles and pennies just to ask what he thought of the grade. (I can tell if a coin is UNC but I have an honest difficulty knowing what makes a '62 versus a '64 )

So on first look his first works were "Very nice!" ... he said that they would all easily grade 62 and started to pick out a few 63's and a couple of 64's... which got me really excited. I'm looking forward to taking the time with each coin and determining top grades and picking those ones out for myself.

I ended up picking up 1000 cent 2x2's and 200 nickle 2x2's. around 50 sheets that hold 2x2's.... Ohh and I also took home a few other trinkets:
- 1838 L.C. Ag. & Commerce token EF
- 1840 nova scoatia one penny EF
-1845 new bruinswick penny EF (it's graded EF but I sincerly believe that it was a VF)
-1945 newfie 5 cent 64
- 1865 newf 20 cent EF
-1873 newf 20 cent F
- 1885 newf 20 cen abt VF
- 1858 Can. 20 cent (my second but this is a bit of an upgrade)

(all the 20 cent newf coins were graded by Bob Armstrong the rest of the coins were in ICCS flips)

With the thought of all the flips I would staple I decided I would go to staples and buy a really good stapler... Currently I was using just your typical office desk stapler and then a decent pair of spring loaded pliers to press the staples down.

I ended up picking up the Swingline Optima 40 stapler. And I think it has changed my world for stapling 2x2's... First off it presses the staple flat in the back of the 2x2 now on it's own so I never have to bring out the pliers. Additionally force and ease of stapling through the cardboard 2x2 is amazing! I have yet to have a botched staple yet! I certainly recommend this stapler if you're in the market for a new one to accommodate your needs.

Couple questions.. the 1970 nickles I have found a few that are slightly rotated, nothing major (and while I don't have a protractor) I think the largest rotation is around 10 degrees... is this common or would there be any premium associated for these rotations?

I also found an 1979 penny I think is probably a MS 64 or 65 that has a partial clip.. would that derrive any premium?

Well today was once again one of those very good days!... Unfortunately it didn't start that way. 2nd day of classes with students at school and while I can't go into too many details we had to go on "lockdown" and it wasn't a drill. Almost an hour later and the police tactical unit finally had cleared the school, I was able to get on with my day.

What made this a really good day was after work I quickly went over to the bank and ended picking up a few of the new $20 notes that commemorate the queen. Well that was a pretty nice surprise! Then just before I get home I check my mail box and find a BEAUTIFUL coin that has been sent to me by a fellow CCF member ... a 1952 DDO 2x HP 50 cent piece. My first example of a hub dubbled coin.

At the end of the day... when you can get to go home to your beautiful family and you're also reminded that there are others out there that care enough about this hobby to help educate a peon like me.... I certainly say I really did feel on top of the world...

Love the forum.. and it's members...

Thanks for sharing - what a story! I've started asking at banks I go to and usually draw a blank. Sometimes I end up with some post 67 nickel dollars - not a bit of silver yet. As I don't really do paper money (as of yet) never thought to ask about old bills - if you get at face you can't go wrong.
Yes, being handed a but of 80% at face is a dream come true. That it actually happened to you gives me hope for the future :)

What a great thread, I wish we could get older coins and notes from banks here in the UK.
