The old Shield nickel design gave way to Charles Barber's Liberty Head. The first type lacked the word Cents on the reverse and unscrupulous individuals plated them in gold and passed them as a $5 gold piece. The word Cents was added to dies creating the last of the 3 types of nickels issued in 1883.
