Hello all,

I am recently been interested in purchasing this gold Greek stater and I already own the byzantion gold coin I'm just curious about what you guys would price it at.

I do not know much about ancients and I do not know where else to go to for a variety of opinions, so I thought ccf would be the perfect place!

Please post your opinions in the comments.

Outwardly the coin looks OK, but I'm no expert on Byzantine gold coins. I do know that these have extensively been copied in Eastern Europe and sold as original coins. Without the coin being certified by an expert, I would not even consider buying it.

It's hard to say based on tiny pictures obscured by plastic glare and the grade on the slab isn't that helpful.

These Mithradates VI AV staters are somewhat plentiful. The obverse dies often look like they were quite rusted when the coins were struck. That seems to be the case here.

I wouldn't recommend buying it if you can't look at it in person or if you can't get better pictures.

There are several places to check for prior sales prices. acsearch.info is a good first stop (I've linked to a search results for "Mithradates VI AV stater").

You can also check CNG's extensive archives (again, I've linked to the relevant search).

It will be impossible for you to make a reasoned comparison though if those are the only pictures you have.
