My 10 year old daughter and I took turns turning nickels under my cheap USB microscope yesterday and we found the following die crack. My 12 year old son came by to look at it and called it the "devil die crack". I think that is an appropriate name for it given that the crack goes from the rim through DE and back to the rim and kind of looks like horns.

My kids are more concerned about value than me. I told them that die cracks aren't really worth much. I said that someone maybe would pay a dollar for most of the one we found but maybe a little more for this one which was the best we found yesterday. If you want to throw in an opinion or comment, please do as I'll show this thread to my kids to show them that there are other collectors out there who enjoy the hobby and who appreciate their "find".

PS - There are some pictures of other die breaks for 1929 at CoinsAndCanada under the "More errors and varieties" section...

Die cracks are really fun to find. I think most would agree though that they don't add much value to a coin. I would much rather find them then buy them. My LCS just showed me a few coins with die cracks that they wanted to sell to me and I said "no thanks!"

That being said, I love your devil die crack! Good find. I would probably pay up to $10 for that one. They are harder to find in george V nickels and that is a nice one!

Thanks for replying robmck1967. My kids were happy to get some feedback. When we get a chance, we'll post pictures of the other die cracks we found.

Sweet die cracks! Looks pretty cool to me. As for premium, I'm not sure what the value goes for die cracks.

Which usb microscope do you use? I've been looking for a rather cheap one that still does the job and yours looks like it does great.

@Paulsz - I bought the cheapest USB microscope at ebay which looks like the one in this auction...

The LED lights are starting to flicker (after not that much use) from a bad internal connection or something and I have to shake it to get them to come on sometimes; consequently, I wouldn't recommend this microscope but if you can win one for just a couple of dollars it might be worth it.

Here are the other die cracks from 1929 we found this past weekend. Nothing too exiting but some of them help build out the progression of the cracks already posted on CoinsAndCanada http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins...29&years=5..

First is an earlier example of #1743 where the crack is only on the top of the S to the rim on CENTS but has not yet appeared on the bottom of the S to the rim...

Here is an earlier example of #2119 where the crack is first appearing between the I and G of DEI GRA and maybe starting between E_I(that said I have to say I'd much prefer to have the later example shown on CaC where it goes rim to rim through V_D_E_I_G_R and is nice and wide...

And the final two examples are the more typically seen crack through GEORGIVS. The first example is G_E and the second G_E_O

Hope you enjoy seeing what we find. Not earth shattering but some family fun for us.
