Need some help with this 8TF. I don't have better pics because I just bought it and waiting to have the coin in hands.. Seems to have a little spike on lower left of first 8 and maybe an open nostril. I really can't identify wich reverse/feather configuration it is with this pic but there are so many vammers more experienced than me... Do you have any suggestion on wich VAM I have to look?   |

I'm not having any luck with this either. It looks like an A2/A1 reverse, which is VAMs 18-23. It doesn't appear to exhibit the date doubling of 18, 19 & 20 and it doesn't appear to have the over-polished wings of 21, 22 & 23. I'm stuck.  |

I'll post new pics when I will receive the coin (I think next weekend) wishing that in the meantime someone can give a look at this 1878 8tf. In refer to the reverse/feather configuration I think that you are right because the nearest one is the A2/A1 reverse but, how you just told me, looking at the VAM numbers 18/23 it doesn't seem one of them... I wish I could help but I'm unable to see your pictures. Some pictures from linked sites don't display for me. I can see all images uploaded to CCF.

Not your fault. It's an issue that my current host has with some image posting sites. Yours show as a box with an 'X' in the center. The links return an "Access Denied" note.
The only way for me to view these is from the computer at home and my schedule lately has restricted my home computing time.

Based on what I can see - sharper detail images would help a lot - I'm thinking this one's an EDS of VAM-22. Not much to go on, though.

Since there is no gap between the bottom serif of I from IGWT and top edge of right wing (viewing left) it can't possibly be an A2/A1 reverse. I'm 99%certain it is an A1j reverse, which must be VAM 14. In order for it to be any stage of VAM 22, the pair of "forward slash" die gouges on top of N of ONE would have to be visible, along with a noticeable gap between I of IGWT and right wing edge. And with regard to the OP's claim of "spiked 8" - simply an anomaly of the image. Edited by judd1552

I'm not seeing A1j in the wing feathers, but the image isn't conclusive.
