I have never found anything truly fantastic, but over the years there have been a few items that have ended up in my hoard. These include the usual wheat cents and early Jefferson nickels, a few silver coins (mostly 40% half dollars, but also a few dimes, quarters, and War Nickels), the occasional foreign coin, and a well-worn 1901 Liberty Head nickel (this one was just a year or two ago). I always watch for coins worth saving, but these days they are few and far between. Even the older Jeffersons seem to have dried up.

One of the best I have heard of was from my father. In the 1960's, he found a nickel three-cent piece in circulation. He was working behind a cash register, and somebody spent it as a dime.

A 1959 halfpenny! I haven't had any halfpennies in change for years... (being passed off as a 2p). Last predecimal coin I received was either a shilling or a farthing.

Over the weekend, going through some change I found 1910, 1922, and a 43 Lincoln cents. The 1920 was the oldest coin I have found in circulation... not worth anything really, but still kinda suprised me.
Rest in Peace

jdheyne, great finds! Take a close look at the 1922. That is a great find. If it is a 22D, its a nice find, if it's a 22 "no D" and its real, its a fantastic find. If it's a "weak D" its still quite valuable, Mike

I found what I think is an escapee from one of those Platinum plated State Quarter sets that the Home Shopping Channel sells. I got all excited seeing a solid silver edge in a roll of quarters I got from the vault, so of course I tore it open first thing, and out pops this super shiny California quarter. First thought was "silver proof?!?", but upon further inspection it has a P mintmark. Darn it all, but still an interesting find. Also came across the first Ike dollar seen at the bank in a long time, and my first West Virginia quarter.

About 2 weeks ago was checking my pocket change for any errors and came across a 1997 Double Ear variety in about AU condition. That's the third one in circulation that I've found. When I'm out east I usually try to get a box of cents at a bank and look through them for errors, that is where I found the other two. This is the first time that I found this dramatic of an error in my pocket change. Mike

How many truly sought after coins are still in circulation? Key dates/semi-key?

I just can't imagine every really finding that "WOW" type coin in my pocket?
Rest in Peace

Sometimes you just get lucky. I found a 1910-S cent a few years back, and what I'm still convinced is a 1914-D cent, but it's so beat up it's impossible to say for sure. Hmmm, sounds like a good topic- "Best ever circulation find"....

I got a couple boxes of halves last Sunday and box 1 was great! it had 119 silver halves, including an 1894S and a 1909, and even though box 2 had no silver, it did contain the real treasure: a 1974D DDO (FS 50c-015)

A couple of decent finds this week, a 1947 silver Canadian dime and a 1944-P wartime nickel. No wheat cents though, a co-worker beat me to those.

Nice FS variety Cave Troll. I recently got a couple of hundred halves, and would you believe, I forgot to look for that variety? Thanks for reminding me of it, but the halves I had are spent now! 119 silver halves...where can I pick up one of those boxes?!
Rest in Peace

I hit the jackpot tonight.

The lady clerk at my favorite convenience store knows my coin collecting addiction, and had a bunch of coins for me. Somebody had paid their bill with metal money, and she let me have it all. It consisted of 10 Sacagaweas, five SBA's, and 12 Kennedy halfs. Not much exciting about the dollars, except for a couple which looked like they came directly from the mint. The JFK's included two 1964's.

In addition she gave me an OLD Mexican coin that somebody had spent there -- a 1939 "1 C." About the size of a nickel, but copper colored.

So, not exactly "found in circulation," but they soon will be!
