I went back to the demolished houses today. I saw that the work crews had hauled away a lot of the rubble and spread dirt to fill in around the foundations of the houses which had previously been covered.
I found a few Memorial cents and a couple of clad dimes in the fill.
I moved to the front of the house where I found the Wheat Cents a week ago. I dug up another Memorial out of the fill and then spotted a green coin lying on the ground. I didn't even need my detector, it was just lying there.
I picked it up and could not believe my eyes. It was an
Indian Head cent! It's only the second Indian I've found in three years of detecting.
I thought it was a toasted piece of junk from its appearance when I found it, but after a few hours soaking in hydrogen peroxide and working on it with a bamboo skewer I have a very presentable 1900
Indian Head cent.
