Hunts have been few and far between for me this fall, but this morning my detecting buddy Tony and I braved the 28 degree temperatures and high winds to search four old house lots where the houses have been torn down. I live in a town of 10,000 about twenty miles north of Milwaukee, WI. The workers at the site said it was village-owned property and that we could hunt it. During our three chilly hours I found a 1948-S silver Roosevelt dime (only my third silver of the year) and four Lincoln Wheat Cents (1925, 1940, 1954-D and 1958-D)along with an old copper ring. The sites were all trashy with a lot of litter and rubble on them, but I feel fortunate. For me this was a very good hunt. The 1925 is a decent coin and the 1958-D looked gorgeous when I found it. I didn't need to clean it at all. It must have been a brand new coin when lost.     Paul Bulgerin

Thanks for the comments. I usually clean detecting finds by soaking them in hydrogen peroxide and using a soft nylon brush and a bamboo skewer to get the dirt off. I've found this works well. The 1958-D didn't need anything done to it. I've never found a Wheat cent that looked that nice when I pulled it out of the ground. Paul Bulgerin

Nice digs! I will be so glad when the crops are finally in around here so I can do some relic hunting this winter. Hunting school yards and the fair grounds gets old after a while. |

the ring is interesting, I found one of those over here mixed up with some nice old English pennies, had a stamp on the inside but I couldn't read it, certainly worth investigating further

Nice finds! Glad you got them before they were covered up again. I have been digging some sites where buildings were torn down to widen an intersection here in Yuma, AZ. If we don't get the coins now.... sad to say but we probably wont get another chance after they are covered with asphalt or concrete. Good Job! Keep digging

I'm waiting for them to tear down the final house so I can get in and detect underneath the old porch. My fingers are crossed on that.
