1847-O $ 5.00

Holy Toledo. What a pleasure to see a coin of this importance, especially when it's so obviously deserving of the grade.

For the reading audience: 1847-O is considered the rarest of the New Orleans $5 gold, and you're looking at one of the finest of them. There are maybe 30 in existence, and I don't think a Mint State example is known. Heritage has offered one AU-55 finer than this coin, many years ago.

Eliasberg only had an AU-50 of this issue.

Indeed the 1847-O Half Eagle is a very tough and important date in the Coronet HE series, and is quite rare in AU grades, so that is a significant acquisition. I would love to see a pic of your coin in a more naturalized light setting to get a better idea of its surface coloration. It's difficult to tell with the high-white setting of the pics provided. Detail-wise, it's a lovely coin.
